The furniture and fittings are a bit dated, which didn't matter overmuch as we were there for what was outside primarily. However, the layout left a lot to be desired and could be improved to better effect. For example the 2nd sink beyond the galley took up valuable accommodation space while the cupboarding/wardrobe beyond it to the rear was susceptible to water ingress with the hatch open, which was necessary if one was to steer "safely" and not run the risk of getting knocked off the back of the boat; there was lots of water ingress, given the weather conditions on 2 of the days we had the boat, with wet clothes as a result as it's not always easy to moor up immediately and batten down hatches in the face of a storm. Steering was a problem with the tiller location. "Safe" steering required standing inside the rear of the boat, one level down from the rear deck, which was challenging in that, unless one is well over 6ft, a clear view ahead was not possible - being over 6ft was not listed as a pre-requisite for hiring the boat. The propellor shaft was damaged prior to hiring the boat; a fact we were unaware of until the steering failed part way through our holiday and we had to struggle to get it safely to the tow path and moor up. Fortunately, other boats were in the vicinity and provided much-needed assistance. We then had to wait for the engineer to arrive and effect a repair before being able to move on. Again, fortunately, it was towards the end of a day's cruising so we were not overly inconvenienced. Despite the above, we did have an enjoyable few days overall and would very likely take another boating holiday. However, we would investigate the facilities, layout and steering positions much more vigorously for any boat we might hire in the future.
Nice, helpful people, good boat, gorgeous area. Loved the coal-burning stove, supplied with lots of fuel.
Wonderful holiday We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. In retrospect we should have hired a boat with a separate bedroom. The toilet was also a bit difficult to flush. But the little wood burner was fantastic...we lit a fire every night. Also, because I am short I didn't have a clear view in front when I was steering the boat...I had to use a chair! But all in all it was a really great experience.
Really enjoyable week and having good weather helped. Very clean nice little boat but probably only suitable for 2 and can't imagine having 3 on board. Extremely well equipped and cooking facilities very good - only ate out once. Take a cushion to sit on whilst steering as a bit uncomfortable perched on the top of the hatch. Boat company lovely to deal with and so friendly. Unlimited fuel provided for the stove which was a nice surprise and we really needed it as it was cold at night but really cosy once the stove was lit. Also diesel included in the price which was one of the reasons we hired from this company. We did the Oxford and Ashby canals from Braunston as far as Snareston and back and terrific route for a week as only 4 locks each way. We will definitely book again and use this boatyard as we were so impressed.
Definitely Do It Again Always Wanted To Give It Go.. Will Love To Do It Again
We booked late on and were very lucky we had good weather on our holiday. We would not do this again because there is not a cover/protection when driving a boat and it is raining and also water would be entering the cabin due to the driving position.
If taking yr dogs along note that pubs along canals (south oxford canal) not really dog friendly, relegated to 'dungeons' or outside.
Small but comfy, has everything you need, Only suitable for 2 adults and a child up to about age 10 due to the single bed being a built in bunk. The boat was easy to steer etc but the "gears" were very hard to move. Having said that we had a great holiday and would return.
Excellent company to hire from; very friendly and the boat was well appointed.
It had a full size cooker, 4 gas rings, and normal under counter fridge. Full suite of cooking utensils, chopping boards & bedding on board. Unlike some companies the dog is free and fuel was included.
We only had three nights so we went towards Rugby, which is very pretty (the canal area!) but there aren't many places to get off. Wrekin is dual control so the throttle is separate to the gears, which can be more challenging but as first time users, we did manage once we got used to it.
Lovely little narrow boat, very cosy and easy to handle, we've had two wonderfull week's aboard and would certainly book her again
Wonderful break! Went in February, so was very cold. We struggled to get the fire going each day, but some friendly boat owners sorted us out. We would definitely do this again, but possibly when it's warmer. However, it was very relaxing as the canal was very quiet at that time of year.
