Just a few miles north of Birmingham lies Cannock Chase, a largely unspoilt area of heathland and forest. It may be the smallest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in mainland Britain, but the variety of landscape here makes it feel larger than it really is. Cannock Chase was originally a hunting ground and wild deer, descended from the herd introduced by the Normans, still roam the woods here. The area is also popular with birdwatchers in search of nightjars and other rare species. Get away from it all in Cannock Forest, where there are many trails to explore, or enjoy some mountain biking deep in the woods. The area has a rich history and to find out more visit the Museum of Cannock Chase in Hednesford.
