Set between the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Wolds and the Vale of York, the Howardian Hills are one of Yorkshire’s best-kept secrets, with some lovely walks. This is a tranquil area of rolling countryside and lush fields, of extensive woodlands and scenic stone-built villages like Terrington and Welburn. At its heart is the beautiful Derwent Valley. The Howardian Hills are probably best known for their rich variety of historic houses. Here you’ll find Castle Howard, one of Britain’s finest stately homes, which was made famous in the TV series of “Brideshead Revisited”. Other great houses here include Hovingham Hall, childhood home of the Duchess of Kent and Duncombe Park. And don’t miss the riverside ruins of Kirkham Priory, on the banks of the Derwent.
