The Kent Downs cover nearly a quarter of the county of Kent, running from the famous white cliffs of Dover to the outer suburbs of London. They make up the eastern half of the North Downs, an area of chalk escarpments and rolling hills, of ancient woodlands, orchards and historic villages. There is an extensive network of footpaths here, including the North Downs Way, which follows the path taken by medieval pilgrims en route to Canterbury. Wildlife lovers will enjoy the various nature reserves within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. For a superb view head to the Devil’s Kneading Trough, while if you’ve an interest in history don’t miss the 800 year old Leeds Castle or Winston Churchill’s house at Chartwell.
