Lincolnshire is better known for its vast expanses of fenland, but in the Lincolnshire Wolds, the county can boast the highest point between Yorkshire and Kent. This deeply rural and sparsely populated region of undulating hills offers spectacular views across the Lincolnshire countryside and to the nearby coast. The popular resorts of Skegness and Mablethorpe are within easy reach. The town of Louth is the unofficial capital of the Wolds and has many fine old houses lining the high street, and there are many other pretty villages to explore here. Among them, Somersby was the birthplace of Alfred Lord Tennyson. Alford Manor House, England’s largest thatched country home, is also worth a visit, while Hubbards Hill, overlooking a steep wooded river valley, is a popular beauty spot.
