Lying just to the south of Bristol and Bath, the Mendips are a fascinating range of limestone hills and dramatic gorges that are a major centre for caving. A popular attraction here is Wookey Hole, a series of caves where even non-cavers can get a feel for underground exploration, while there are many iron age remains to capture the interest of history lovers. Cheddar, home of our best-loved cheese is also nearby, along with Cheddar Gorge, a noted beauty spot. At the foot of the Mendips are the Somerset Levels, a rich farming area that also includes the city of Wells, best known for its wonderful cathedral set in remarkably well-preserved medieval surroundings and Glastonbury, famous for its annual music festival and links to the legend of King Arthur.
