This is Britain’s second largest designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, straddling the borders of Cumbria, Northumbria and Durham, and it boasts a stunning and varied landscape. With only two towns of any great size, it is one of the last true wildernesses in England, a land of open moorland, deep dales, waterfalls and stone-built cottages. It is a haven for wildlife – 60% of England’s Black Grouse live here – while in Spring it is transformed into a riot of colourful wild flowers. High Force Waterfall in Teesdale is one of the area’s main attractions and the lovely gardens at Eggleston Hall are also well worth a visit. Or why not take a ride on the South Tynedale Steam Railway and enjoy the gorgeous scenery in comfort?
