Covering 38 miles from Berwick-upon-Tweed to the Coquet Estuary, the Northumberland Coast is one of Britain’s most atmospheric coastlines. From the rocky cliffs in the north to the sand dunes and mudflats in the south, there is a real sense of remoteness on this wild and windswept shore. The Farne Islands here are home to Britain’s largest grey seal colony. This was the birthplace of English Christianity. Lindisfarne, with its famous castle and priory, was founded by Celtic monks in the 7th century, and the island is only accessible at low tide. Also of interest here are the beautifully preserved Bamburgh Castle and the castle at Dunstanburgh, while a visit to historic Berwick-upon-Tweed is an opportunity to see the famous barracks at this much contested town.
