This is one of Britain’s smallest Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with a distinctive landscape that’s particularly rich in wildlife. Silverdale and Arnside sit on the borer between Lancashire and Cumbria, just below the Lake District at the head of Morecambe Bay. Here you can find rare birds like bitterns and marsh harriers, as well as waterbirds in their thousands. Much of the ancient woodlands and coastal marshes are owned by the National Trust and RSPB, who manage the reserve at Leighton Moss, and the area is delightfully unspoilt. It’s perfect for nature lovers. The local beauty spot at Arnside Knot, and the quiet seaside resort of Arnside make a great destination for a day out, while the refurbished art deco Midland Hotel in Morecambe is an architectural gem.
