Lying just above the Lake District, the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty stretches from the historic harbour town of Maryport up to the Scottish border. Set on the English side of the Solway Firth, the third largest estuary in the UK, the Solway Coast offers wonderful views to the hills opposite. The sunsets can be stupendous, one of the reasons so many walkers are attracted here. The coast is home to huge numbers of wildfowl, many quite rare, attracted by the wide saltmarshes and mudflats. Other attractions include the western section of Hadrian’s Wall that starts here and the charming Victorian seaside town of Silloth. This houses the Solway Coast Discovery Centre where you can find out more about this unspoilt region.
