Berwickshire forms a large part of the border country between England and Scotland. With few large towns, there is plenty of quiet countryside to explore and one of our holiday cottages in Berwickshire makes a perfect base for walking, riding, cycling and fishing.Berwickshire is blessed with a number of fine country houses. Paxton House has a marvellous collection of Chippendale furniture and beautiful grounds to explore, while Mellerstain House in Gordon is noted for its ornate ceilings, designed by William and Robert Adam. Other country houses worth a visit during one of our Berwickshire cottage holidays are Thirlestane Castle in Lauder and Manderston House, an opulent Edwardian building with a unique silver staircase. The coast here is particularly fine with some wonderful views from the high cliffs. There are a number of picturesque coastal villages, including Cove and Coldingham, and don’t miss St. Abbs Head Nature Reserve, in summer the home to one of Britain’s largest seabird colonies. Walkers should head to the Lammermuir Hills, ideal for getting out into the country, while Hirsel Country Park near Coldstream (home of the famous Coldstream Guards) also has a number of woodland and lakeside walks to enjoy.
