Holiday cottages in Caithness

On Scotland’s north-eastern tip, Caithness is a land of wild moorland, open farmland and scattered settlements. The coastline is spectacular with dramatic cliffs and rock stacks, where large colonies of seabirds cluster. A break in one of our holiday cottages in Caithness is perfect for nature lovers. The Forsinard Nature Reserve is a unique habitat that attracts rare birds like the Golden Plover and Hen Harrier, while Dunnet Bay is a local beauty spot and wildlife reserve.

During your cottage holiday in Caithness, you’re sure to want to visit John O’ Groats, as well as Thurso, the most northerly town in mainland Britain. There was a major Viking presence in Caithness and at Wick you can see the remains of the Norwegian castle that once stood proud here. Wick still has many reminders of its herring fishing heyday, as well as boasting the world’s shortest street. Our Caithness holiday cottages are also well placed for the Castle of Mey. Once in ruins, it was rescued and restored by the Queen Mother and now features some beautiful gardens. At the other end of the spectrum, Mary-Ann’s Cottage near Dunnet is a traditional croft that has been left exactly as it was when Mary-Ann Calder, its last inhabitant, lived there.
