• About Captain’s Cottage

This end cottage, 100 yards from the beach, enjoys an unrivalled position with magnificent views over the sea, harbour and beaches from both front and side windows and lies at the very eastern edge of Whitby, yet only a short walk, 300 yards, down cobbled streets to the harbour bridge. Captains Cottage is an award-winning holiday cottage and is the one retained by the developers partly for their own family use. Sensitively re-built from a former old smokehouse, the architect designed interiors are spacious and well-proportioned with double glazing, cosy efficient heating and an array of bathrooms/shower rooms. Parking for two cars and an outdoor seating area with picnic chairs are available (both almost unique in Whitby). The cottage is in an ideal position for both summer and winter holidays. Old maritime Whitby with all its history, the famous 199 steps, the abbey, restaurants, pubs and museums are all within a short stroll. Extensive walking including the Cleveland Way is available locally and even direct from the cottage.

We booked this cottage for a family weekend to celebrate my Dad's 80th birthday so we had a mixed age group including teenagers. The cottage gave us everything we needed and plenty of space. Location is great & availability of parking a real bonus. Only things that would improve it would be some soap in the bathrooms/toilets and maybe wifi. A great place!

Can't beat the location and view from cottage. Went last year, but this year could see that an update of interior would improve comfort. Tip take your own towels.

Great place to stay and plenty of room for 8 adults. Only negative would be the poor phone signal and no internet but if you want peace and quiet that won't bother you.

Great location and good to have some parking. Wifi would be good as would a pair of scissors in the kitchen! Love it and hope to go again next year.

This is a lovely cottage in a fantastic location. It is equipped to a good standard but would benefit from wi-fi. There is also poor mobile phone signal. Great if you want to get away from it all!

A lovely cottage, albeit a little in need of some TLC but with all equipment you need and in a fantastic location with the much needed private car parking.

The cottage is in a fabulous position with a sea view that you could sit for hours watching. There's no through traffic which is great and parking is a bonus. The bedrooms were all of a good size and exceedingly comfortable. It was relaxing listening to the sea at night to help you drift off to sleep. The bathrooms were lovely especially one having a bath. I would highly recommend the cottage; a week was not long enough!

I love these cottages and have stayed in all three. I do however think they are looking a bit tired. Especially captains cottage. The duvet was old. Could tell. Bedding and beds not great. I think things like that are important. You've gone on holiday for a break. If you don't sleep right then no good. Little things. No lamps in bedrooms. And wall lights no bulbs in. It needs a bit of tlc. When you are paying quite a lot for the week out of season and over double that in summer hols I think little things are needed. The TV is far too small for a massive room like this. And no WiFi. ..everywhere has WiFi nowadays. People like home from home and if my bedding were old at home I'd change it. The duvet was flat and horrible. Wouldn't go again. I'd love to be the person to change what needs changing . Would make a massive difference.

What a wonderful cottage, great location in a beautiful town. We love the views, access to local pubs etc, and having the car nearby was another bonus. We have booked again to the same cottage for next year. Excellent!

I find it hard to review this cottage. On one hand it is an amazing space in an awesome location, with the benefit of two car parking. I feel no one would be disappointed in a holiday here in Whitby. However, i feel the cottage was lacking in the personal touch. There was a pint of milk, but no tea bags? After 3 hours of traveling that is the least I expect as a welcome pack. Not much I can do with a pint of milk! No guest review book to find out from other holiday makers what they had enjoyed, which were the best pubs for dinner. This cottage boasts 3 bathrooms, but not one bar of soap? Few broken bits and bobs, no locks on the bathroom doors. Others have mentioned the tired decor. Call me picky, but I holiday twice a year in cottages and this has been one of the most expensive. I've had to wait patiently to stay here for 3 years, it is obviously extremely popular, but that does not mean that an effort should not be made.
