    In a peaceful setting surrounded by countryside, this delightful cottage (far left of property shown) lies in Clapton-on-the-Hill, a sleepy village set a spectacular 700ft above sea level. With wonderful walking just yards from the doorstep, it adjoins the owners’ home, sharing their garden with views across the Windrush Valley. The Cotswold village of Bourton-on-the-Water, with its shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants, is just 2 miles, whilst Cheltenham is 20 miles and the dreaming spires of Oxford are a 40 minute drive. Lodge Park and Sherborne Estate (NT) 4 miles. Shops 2 miles and pub 2½ miles.

    Stunning location. Peaceful. Friendly owners and nothing was too much. Lovely wood burner which was used every night.

    We have stayed at many places over the years and we always give an honest review. Farncombe has good and bad points for us. To be fair we tend to avoid anywhere where the owner is also at the location as generally, we find them to be intrusive, as we had to cancel our original booking we had no choice this time. The location of the property is off the beaten track, there are no shops, pubs or anything in the area, the nearest place is around 2 1/2 miles away at Bourton-on-the-water which is very picturesque, also extremely busy. As you look at the property please note the holiday rental is to the left, the right hand-side is the owners' accommodation, this is where you will find the stunning views, sadly on nice days the owners are seated there enjoying them, although they will invite you to sit with them it is not quite the same as having your own space, you do feel you are intruding on their side of the property. As the rental has mainly skylights you can only see the view from the twin room through the skylight window. Inside, the double bedroom is downstairs, sadly we found it dark, cold, the bed and the pillows were very hard and there is also an unpleasant smell. The lounge is comfortable, the dining room although with 4 chairs comfortably sits three people. There is a toilet in this room, with a septic tank easily broken if you flush too hard. The twin bedroom also has the same hard beds and pillows, fine if this is your preference. The washing machine is shared and we were not told where to find it, if you go all around the house there is a locked room, I can tell you that the key for this is located in the downstairs bathroom inside the airing cupboard. However, the owners prefer you to use the washing machine that runs on the cheap overnight rate, so put your washing in the machine the day before and then ask them to turn it on for you, there are no instructions. In summary, if this property was a stand alone and you could freely come and go and use the facilities as and when it suits you, enjoy the garden by yourselves, be free to come and go without constantly reporting in where you are going or have been! it would have been perfect. So, the downside for us was that we felt more like intruders, afraid to use the electricity and other things that we had paid for without asking permission. There were so many different recycling instructions that we tried to follow but in the end we left a day early and had to leave the bags outside with the rubbish, we had filled a blue bag, with cardboard, another with hard plastic, another with cans another with food rubbish, another with general, and still there were more instructions. Also, we were not initially greeted very warmly as we were an hour early, the owner then went straight on to complain how much they got out of our booking as opposed to what we paid? Not a great start. There was a pint of milk, 6 eggs and a bottle of wine left, which is lovely but any travellers would really appreciate after a long journey at least a few tea bags or coffee? So after unpacking we had to go 5 miles there and back to obtain essentials. Our advice? go prepared. I'm sure the owners have the best intentions and are friendly enough, they have been renting for many years but our personal preference is to be left alone to enjoy our hols! You cannot say this without appearing rude.
