Lying at the very heart of Devon, Dartmoor is one of the UK’s oldest, and wildest, National Parks. The granite hills, or tors as they are called, here rise to over 2,000 feet, surrounded by vast areas of heath and moorland. There are numerous rivers and streams, and fishing and canoeing are popular pastimes. There are also plenty of walks to be enjoyed alongside the tumbling waters or in search of the many prehistoric remains in the countryside here. Dartmoor is well-known for its wildlife, too. Keep an eye out for Dartmoor ponies who have roamed wild here for centuries, and for the buzzards that can be seen soaring overhead. Other attractions include Buckfast Abbey and the magnificent Castle Drogo, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.
