West of Newcastle and starting at Hadrian’s Wall, the Northumberland National Park stretches all the way to the Scottish border. It has been called the most tranquil part of England, a land of big skies and breathtaking views where you can enjoy nature to the full. To the north are the rolling moors of the Cheviot Hills, while to the west are wild valleys where red squirrels can still be found. The beautiful Upper Coquet Valley in the heart of the park is home to the pretty villages of Harbottle and Holystone, both boasting rare signs of prehistoric human habitation.Highlight of the area is Hadrian’s Wall, built in Roman times and still well preserved for much of its length. Housesteads Fort is one of the best parts to visit if you’re short of time.
