Despite its name, Hampshire’s New Forest dates back almost 1,000 years to the time of William the Conqueror and in many ways has remained unchanged since then. This ancient hunting forest is today the largest area of unenclosed land in Southern Britain and a paradise for nature lovers. The Forest features an extensive network of paths and trails, ideal for exploring on foot, cycle or horseback, and there is an abundance of wildlife. The famous New Forest Ponies roam freely here, while deep in the forest are large numbers of wild deer. For a great day out, pay a visit to the Beaulieu Motor Museum or Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway. And with many miles of coastline, the New Forest offers much for beach lovers too.
