Stretching from Winchester in the West to the dramatic cliffs at Beachy Head, the South Downs are one of the large areas of chalk upland that run through England’s southern counties. There are spectacular views from the top of these rolling hills – Devil’s Dyke is a particularly impressive lookout point – and with more than 2,000 miles of footpaths, plenty of opportunity to enjoy them. Paragliding and mountain biking are also popular activities here. Don’t miss a visit to the historic towns of Arundel, with its fine castle, Lewes with its lovely Tudor houses or Winchester with its famous cathedral. The South Downs are also bordered by the popular stretch of coast running from Eastbourne to Chichester, which includes famous seaside towns like Brighton and Bognor Regis.
