This is Rugby country – the birthplace of Rugby Sevens. Throughout Spring and Summer, Melrose hosts the annual sevens tournament, which attracts Rugby fans from around the world. Melrose is also the place to go to appreciate fully the triple peaks of the Eildon Hills, a famous landmark in these parts. Not to be missed is Abbotswood House, the home of Sir Walter Scott, and now a fascinating museum devoted to the famous author. It’s packed with Scottish memorabilia, and the library is magnificent. For shopping head to Kelso, where the wide market square features a variety of specialist shops. The region is also famous for its knitwear, best seen in the town of Hawick, where you can buy top quality wool and cashmere from the local manufacturers.
