Dumfriesshire is an unspoilt corner of Scotland, mountainous in the north and with fertile plains in the south and down to the coast of the Solway Firth. A break in one of our holiday cottages in Dumfriesshire is the perfect way to get away from it all.

The imposing ruins of Caerlaverock castle, are encircled by a wide moat and surrounded by the extensive marshlands of the Caerlaverock Wetland Centre – a firm favourite with birdwatchers. Threave Castle is also well worth a visit during one of our Dumfiresshire cottage holidays. This massive tower is set on an island in the river Dee and you need to take a boat to get there. Built centuries later, the baroque masterpiece that is Drumlanrig Castle has a fantastic collection of artworks and precious items. The extensive parkland here is very popular with cyclists.

Robert Burns spent his last years in the county town of Dumfries and the Robert Burns Centre here tells his story. Other towns of interest are Moffat, an attractive Victorian spa, and Langholm , birthplace of the poet Hugh McDiarmuid.
