Selkirkshire may seem like a land of peace and tranquillity, but in days gone by it was the scene of much conflict between the Scots and English. It may be a good idea to watch the film “Braveheart” again before starting your cottage holiday in Selkirkshire – William Wallace was declared Guardian of Scotland here and there is a huge statue of the Scots hero near Dryburgh. Once this was largely forest, a hunting ground for the Scottish kings, but today it is a rural county, with rolling uplands and glorious scenery, especially in the Ettrick and Yarrow river valleys. Nearby is St. Mary’s Loch, the largest expanse of water in southern Scotland and an easy journey from our holiday cottages in Selkirkshire. The town of Galashiels is well known for its textiles and has a good choice of bars and restaurants given its relatively small size. While in Selkirk you’ll find Halliwell’s House, the oldest house in the town, which is now the local museum. And not to be missed during one of our cottage holidays in Selkirkshire is a trip to Bowhill House, home of the Duke of Buccleuch. This fine stately home boasts a renowned art collection as well as lovely parkland to explore.
