Our holiday cottages in the Vale of York are ideally located for exploring the ancient city of York, as well as enjoying the countryside in this largely agricultural area. And if you’re a fan of English history, you’ll find much to fire your imagination in this part of Yorkshire.York has been an important city since Roman times and there are still plenty of reminders of the Roman presence here. York is also proud of its Viking heritage, which you can experience at the Jorvik the Viking City Museum in the city centre. There are plenty of reminders too of York’s status in medieval times. York Minster is one of our greatest cathedrals, boasting some magnificent stained glass windows, and it’s an easy drive from our holiday cottages in the Vale of York.Make time for a visit to Castle Howard, the magnificent palace designed by Hawksmoor, which was featured in the TV version of Brideshead Revisited. And the romantic ruins of Rievaulx Abbey will give you an insight into monastic life. For something a bit different, there’s Eden Camp, a museum with the theme of civilian life in World War II.
