Great location near good pub, canal lovely for walks and cycling. Good facilities with a few minor gaps. Tumble dryer but no drying rack or line, toilet flushes poorly and rather grotty dead zone behind house. However lovely huge sofa for whole family, great balcony for evening drinks.

This cottage is set in a lovely location overlooking the canal. The shop across the road caters for your needs for a paper in the morning, however, it is quite expensive for other items. The pub across the road is also perfect if you dont want to cook and you can sit out and watch the goings on! The area does get very busy for parking during the day so it is lucky that the cottage has its own parking. Although the cottage was clean when we arrived, it could have been done to a better standard. A nice gesture would be to have a 'start up' or 'welcome' kit for when new guests arrive to ensure they have toilet rolls, kitchen roll and maybe some milk, eggs, bread, tea and coffee etc at least for the first couple of days. We have had this in previous holiday cottages. We would advise anyone to use the kettle which goes on the stove rather than the electric kettle as this was full of limescale. Would suggest a larger fridge would be suitable to cater for 8 people. The grill tray which is in the oven needs a good clean (we ended up going out and buying foil trays to use in the grill and a new frying pan) - suggest the utensils and pots and pans be upgraded / increased in quantity to be suitable for 8 guests. The cottage is advertised for 8 people, however, the main table in the kitchen/dining area seats 6 as standard - there are spare chairs but you would struggle. Similarly with the seating on the balcony - there is seating for 4 people with the table and chairs, spare chairs are available but space is limited. BBQ is in need of a clean if you wanted to use it. More ambient lighting needed upstairs so you dont have to have the main light on in the evenings. The bedrooms are quite spacious for the size of the property, make sure you take your own coat hangers though! One thing which did concern us is that the property seems to have a lack of main plug sockets and a lot of the sockets available are run off extension leads (one didnt work in the twin room which meant only 1 plug was available). Considering the size of the family room then more storage could be available in here. We had read previous reviews of the property before we arrived, the one thing we do agree with is the issue with a leak in the bath when you have a shower, need to ensure you mop up when you have had a shower!! With regards to outdoor space, there is a small patch of land to the side of the property but this is unfenced so you would have to take extra care with younger children and animals. There is an area to the other side of the property, which can be seen from the balcony, however, this unaccessible and gravelled so not ideal for smaller children to play on. This area would have to be accessed by coming out of the front door, onto the road (which is very busy during the day) and climbing over a concrete piped area (not ideal). Overall, our suggestion is that this is a lovely cottage which needs some TLC and upgrading. Due to the location of the property I think this could be an outstanding cottage if some changes were made.

Old and shabby we can cope with (with 5 kids in tow) but the cottage was filthy. The living room carpet had not been hoovered because the hoover bag was so full it had burst- it looked like the bag had been in there for 5 years. The oven was grim - old fat and burnt on stuff - I had to clean it to cook in it because it smelt really bad and it took some doing I can tell you - shelves all put through the dishwasher twice as the carbon kept coming off on our food. Kitchen floor was filthy - I had to mop it using really hot water and bathroom cleaning solution. Kitchen cupboard doors all stick and oily. Not nice. Balcony - broken mouldy furniture and bowls of spent cigarettes, BBQ used as an ashtray. Nothing had been cleaned or tidied away when broken. My sister and I stayed and cleaned it so that we didn't disappoint our 5 children but would not recommend staying unless you like cleaning someone else's mess. In the bathroom, the corner of the bath wasn't sealed (20cm long hole) so water went straight through the hole, down the side of the bath and onto the floor. We used towels to mop it up after every bath or shower. I fixed this with my glue gun midweek as I got sick of washing towels! The heating didn't work - owner got the boiler fixed midweek . They did give us cleaning fluids eventually and a cloth - I just think the owners have got too much on with owning the canal boats and cafe. Shame because the location is so lovely. Throw some money at the place for new curtains (they were all hanging off and grubby) and employ an external cleaning company and this could be a wonderful holiday location.

We had very specific requirements that the cottage had to be within half an hour of Stafford, sleep our three daughters in one room, be able to seat 8 comfortably around the dinner table, and have a log burner. Wharf Cottage was able to do all this and so much more. The large open plan room exceeded all expectations. It was very cosy and enabled us to all be together all of the time. The location was great, with a cafe and pub on the doorstep. I expect the cottage hadn't been used for a while as it was initially quite cold, and not as clean as I would have expected, but overall, a great time was had by all.

First impressions were of the fabulous scenery and amazing location. Plenty of space in the cottage, we could store our bikes and fishing gear. However, the cottage could do with some TLC, new beds, fridge, cooker and bathroom due to leaks and the smell of damp. This cottage is overpriced due to cleanliness and neglect of care to equipment and resources.
