All breaks for all arrivals
V nice break. Take yr fishing rod
We were not too happy. There was an awful smell in the kitchen which we reported and was told someone would come and sort out no one did. The cooker was not fully operational. The beds were very uncomfortable. We felt the lodge was "very tired".
I had bee here before, however it was in October and very peaceful, this time was Late August, unfortunately their were far too many caravans and these surrounded the Lodges so not private at all, so I would go here again off season if you want peace and quiet.
The Lodge itself was fine apart from the TV remote did not work, I reported it straight away and the park staff brought new batteries, unfortunately this did not resolve the issue and it wasn't resolved all weekend, not a big problem but it should have been.
The previous occupants must have been smokers, and although not in the Lodge they must have smoked outside and threw the cigarette stumps all over the floor, I thought it could have been cleared up before we arrived as this gave a poor impression.
Overall I would say go here out of any holiday season, it will be more peaceful and private, but whenever you go walk around the grounds at Elvaston Castle, which is only 5 minutes walk away it is really nice and you can spend hours in there.
We had a great relaxing holiday at beech wood park. Their is a lot to do in Derbyshire, just take your pick! we used our lodge as a base, and very relaxing after a long day. Kids loved it, and would love to return again. The lodge was lovely and clean with very good quality furnishings. The owner Colin was very helpful. Really enjoyed a good holiday.
Had a brilliant, relaxing, quiet break here. Beautiful lodge and surroundings. There are no facilities here but thats what we wanted. There are plenty of shops and attractions nearby. It was lovely to come back to our lodge after a long busy day with the kids. Loved watching the wildlife especially at night. Great fishing facilities if your into fishing, we aren't but myself and my daughter loved walking around the lakes feeding the ducks. Would recommend to everyone. Thanks for a lovely time.
If you needed to contact a member of staff you had to phone them, as there was no reception office.
Very disappointed. We arrived late afternoon as instructed to find no staff on site but no security preventing access either. Mobile numbers were displayed near site entrance. We had virtually no mobile signal so were lucky to get through. We were told which lodge to take and that the keys were in the door but nothing else about the site or facilities.
Driving on to the site, we were surprised and disappointed to see that over half of the location seems to be at least semi-permanently occupied, by what looks like a caravanned encampment, housing the workforce and families of a roadworks breakdown recovery company. This and much of the rest of the site resembled more of a travellers camp than the "Tranquil leisure complex" described in the advertising.
We only saw the shop / cafe open once during the week. No member of staff came to see us at any point until the final day, the morning after we had to phone the staff and make a complaint about some new arrivals, who had set up camp near the lodge and were making a lot of noise after 10pm. To make this complaint we had sent texts to both the numbers, which received no reply. We then phoned one number, and spoke to a gentleman who sounded like he was in a noisy pub. The call was disconnected about 30 seconds in to the conversation. This gentleman called back about 30 minutes later, claiming his phone had "been low on battery and had ran out of charge during the call". God knows what anyone would have done if they had been trying to contact him to tell him his site was on fire, or any other sort of emergency.
In the meantime we phoned the other contact number a few times until they finally picked up, clearly from being asleep. This lady was then very apologetic about the situation and promised to resolve it, which to be fair to her, she did about half an hour later.
We were told the next morning, as though she should have been awarded some sort of service medal, that she'd had "a 40 minute round trip to come and sort that out at half ten"...and the problem we were informed, was due to the early arrival of one section of a very large party of people who come to the site for a weekend every year, to hold a "Charity festival organised by South Africans, to support the white farmers evicted by the Mugabe regime in Zimbabwe"...the rest of this party arrived at 9am on the Friday morning and were pitching tents and setting up caravans on the grass outside of our lodge. I was extremely glad to be leaving, especially as many of the party were already drinking, even though it was still relatively early morning.
The gentleman who appeared to be the site manager, told us with much misplaced excitement, that the evening's "Festival entertainment highlight" was going to Toyah Wilcox! This was utterly irrelevant to us.
No one around on arrival. We had to ring them. No numbers on Lodges to make it easy to identify which was the one you had booked. Cooker oven not good ,burnt on food made it smoke when used. The rest of the place was clean ,however, I was amazed how close together both tents and caravans were to each other. I felt it was an accident waiting to happen. (A fire hazard).I have never been on a site that was so crowded together.
Got there on time, the reception was closed, had to contact someone on their mobile. There were no times of when the reception was open and during the course of the week, no member of staff bothered to ask whether everything was OK.
In fact, in a whole week, we noted the reception was open for one lunch time only.
The impression was that the priority for the business was the fishing lake, and the campers and chalet users were an afterthought.
There were no emergency contacts numbers, for local doctors etc., there were no instructions of how to use the hot water, which was potentially dangerous single tap arrangement.
I don't expect or want a five star hotel experience, just basic meet and greet and customer service would be nice.
Unable to contact staff about problems, only telephone contact. No staff at reception when we arrived it was closed, we reported things wrong with accommodation these where not resolved by the time we had left.
Having read previous reviews, we arrived (albeit late) with interest. No-one at reception so rang Colin, he met us at the house to let us know we had been upgraded. Found the Swallow lodge and got ourselves in. A pleasant lodge with good aspect, however as other reviews have mentioned, some little details missing - the tap in the bathroom could only produce hot water, not too much of a problem. In the kitchen there were a definite lack of pans, only casserole dishes available, and I would really welcome a co-ordinated set of kitchen utensils in these lodges, and no information in the lodge for contacts, owners or local services or places to visit. This doesn't seem like much but does help a holiday if you can look through a book/brochure of places to visit. We came with a plan but others may not.
A very peaceful site. Really enjoyed the quiet and surrounding countryside.
Did not use any of the facilities
wonderful quiet peacful ideal for a restful week away from everything am looking forward to retrning
Lovely surroundings, could do with some general maintenance especially the covered outside seated area by our lodge. Lodge itself was very nice although the plumbing in the shower needed attention but overall a very nice break.
