Sitting in the grounds of the Lowther Castle Estate, just within the Lake District National Park, 16 Lowther Village is found in a former estate workers ‘village’ of pretty sandstone cottages. Built in the 1770s, this terraced cottage is Grade II* listed and set in lawned courtyards designed by the renowned architect Robert Adam for the 1st Earl of Lonsdale. Occupying a prominent position in the village, this two-storey cottage has been sympathetically restored using traditional techniques and materials together with environmentally friendly and sustainable energy sources. The dual aspect living room with solid oak floor benefits from a wood burning stove and has been stylishly furnished with a contemporary feel. With a well-stocked library, numerous board games and even a Wii - there’s something for everyone! Outside, the enclosed patio is a fantastic sun trap, perfect for relaxing in after an exhilarating day walking in the fells. Upstairs the bedrooms reflect the contemporary décor and are stylishly furnished to a minimalist taste, and beds are dressed with luxurious 600 thread count linen. A larger than average landing provides the perfect space for children (or adults!) to relax on the sofa and play on the Xbox.
Stunning Lowther Castle sits in extensive gardens, and its grounds run down to the River Lowther. Just a short walk from the cottage, it is an increasingly popular visitor attraction in itself, with the Lowther Estate offering guests of all ages a wealth of experiences. Families of younger children will particularly enjoy the Hidden Garden. The estate offers events throughout the year, with the Lowther Show held every August, a family orientated traditional country fair, and Kendal Calling, an annual music festival held every July with hundreds of bands entertaining many thousands of music lovers.
Head through the Lowther Estate, either by car or on foot, through the glorious grounds to the nearby village of Askham, with Pooley Bridge just a short drive away, just one of the popular villages dotted on the edges of Lake Ullswater. Lowther is ideally placed for the market towns of Keswick and Penrith, and a perfect base for enjoying the delights of the northern Lakes. Alternatively, the beautiful Eden Valley is on the doorstep for walks, fabulous scenery and villages offering Cumbrian hospitality at its finest, with traditional pubs, village bakeries and coffee shops offering home bakes to enjoy. Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant ½ mile.

Very comfortable, generally well equipped cottage. No ice tray (which seemed odd), and there were dvds provided but no means of playing them. There was an xbox which, after phoning the admin office, we discovered had the ability to play dvds, but only if you download an app onto the xbox. You needed a login to do this, which obviously we don't have. It would be much simpler to spend £25 on a small dvd player for guests to use. Maybe we've just been spoiled by other cottages we've rented, but it would have been nice to have a little welcome pack on arrival, even just with a couple of tea bags and coffee sachets. There was no salt and the liquid soap in the bathroom ran out on the third day. These little touches can make all the difference. Having said all that, we would rent the cottage again as we had a lovely time there. (My daughter wants me to mention how comfortable the beds are too!)

Couldn’t fault accommodation- it was excellent. Very spacious, clean, comfy big bed and well equipped kitchen. All scores would have been a 10 if there had been a local shop in walking distance. Can recommend both the cafes at Lowther Castle and the Bird of Prey centre - castle cafe allows dogs in too. Found the Lake District very dog friendly.
