Thornthwaite lies 3 miles to the west of Keswick at the foot of Whinlatter and close to Bassenthwaite Lake. This area is great for mountain biking in Whinlatter Forest, and walking on the surrounding fells, and sailing or fishing on the lake. There are many walks to be enjoyed from the door as well as easy access to Newlands, Borrowdale and the Western Lakes. There is a bridle way immediately behind Ladstock Hall where you can walk to Braithwaite, a little over half a mile, which has a village shop, restaurant and three pubs each serving good food and real ale.
