This could have been a great place - location was perfect (pretty much every attraction we wanted was within 45 minutes max and ample walking for the dog/kids), price was good, reasonably well equipped, owner was very accommodating/helpful, etc. However it hadn't been cleaned when we arrived and was generally a bit 'tired' e.g. bathroom door didn't shut properly, shower door stops were broken, grips on stairway were poking through the carpet, loose floorboards upstairs, wardrobes and dressers were in need of repair. We even had to clean out the vacuum cleaner, which had bits missing, before we could use it (maybe explains why it wasn't cleaned). We'd go again if we knew the above had been sorted but, without being able to confirm that, we'd probably pay a bit more and find somewhere else.

Excellent little cottage for a short break, we were a family of three with a dog and were made to feel very welcome by the owner (who lives next door). lighting the log burner in the evening after a day out made the place feel very warm and cosy. Would stay here again if we venture to this area of in the future.

A characterful house that feels like a very traditional Welsh miners cottage, with mountain views. It has a large wood burning stove, and a well-equipped kitchen. Very low doorways seem to add to the charm of the place!

A cosy and relaxing straight-forward little retreat. Plenty of things to see and do nearby and we were pleased to see the lovely autumn colours around the area.

We had a fantastic week in this cottage and a good central location for all things to do. Clive the owner couldn't do enough to help out and make sure our stay was enjoyable and comfortable. We will certainly be returning again in the not to distant future!

Love this cottage, really well equipped with everything you need and more and the wood burner was very nice after a day in the hills. Clive the owner was very welcoming and checked to make sure that we were okay part way through the week. Location wise we couldn't fault it as it was so close to the playground that is the Wrysgan and Cwmorthin mines ( a walk up to the back of the Wrysgan incline is a must), it was ideal for Snowdon and our favourite place llanberis and Pete's eats. We have plenty of unfinished business in the area and are already planning a return trip.

We found Afon Cottage, and owner Clive, great. The cottage was very cosy and had everything we needed. We did think though that if you had older children it would be overcrowded with 4 people, even though there is a second bedroom with bunk beds. Unfortunately, Tanygrisiau was a bit isolated for us. The pub was really disappointing and there is nowhere else to find food and drink unless you make your way to the Lakeside Cafe at the other end of the village. A 20 minute walk, or a hair raising drive. Even Blaenau doesn't really have a lot going for it in terms of food and drink (well, as far as we could tell). I think if you're walkers then this place has a lot going for it. Having said all that we had lovely break. The location is good for getting to lots of places: the Great Orme in Llandudno, Conway Castle, Ffestiniog Railway (obviously!), Harlech Castle, Taly Llyn railway, Llyn peninsula, plus the Zipworld venues. The weather wasn't good enough for us to participate this time but we are planning to return in the not too distant future.

I came up to do some mountain walking and the cottage was an ideal base for me. The cottage was warm and cozy. The owner lives next door so very easy to contact him if any problems (which there weren't) and he's very helpful and friendly. An enjoyable stay.

Nice quiet location overlooking the Ffestiniog railway and within easy distance of a variety of easy to medium difficulty walks into the hills and around the fascinating remains of the Victorian slate mining/quarrying industry. Kids loved the trip to Bounce Below and a good way to let off steam and release your inner child! 75 mins was plenty of time to get worn out! A good base for trips to the coast (Llandudno or Porthmadog). If you know Wales and like the variety of scenery and weather then this place is for you.
