Nearby, at the foot of the Hambleton Hills, the traditional market town of Thirsk, 4 miles, is renowned as the ‘Darrowby’ of the James Herriot books (an interesting museum has now been created from the former veterinary practice) and is also home to a famous racecourse and a cinema. Children especially will love a day out at the Monk Park Farm centre, and the nearby Birds of Prey and Conservation Centre is well worth a visit as is Sion Hill Hall, a neo-Georgian masterpiece built by the ‘Lutyens of the North’. Rievaulx Abbey, Flamingo Land theme park, Eden Camp, Pickering and Castle Howard are all within easy reach and the fascinating city of York is a mere 25 miles distant.     We booked the cottage for the weekend to celebrate a birthday and had a perfect stay! For a group of 8 girls in our 30’s we found it great, hot tub was spacious and the kitchen had everything we needed. The location is quiet and the patio/hot tub area was private and relaxing. There’s a nice 3 mile walk you can do from the village, and a local pub over the road (unfortunately this was closed during our stay, but the owner said it would be reopening soon and it looked lovely). Sunday lunch at the carpenters arms just 5 mins drive away was amazing. Thirsk is a 10 min drive away and has a well connected train station and Tesco/Lidl which is super convenient for getting the food shopping for your stay. The WiFi was good in the main building but no signal in the annexe but this wasn’t a problem. The cottage was cosy and clean and I’d definitely recommend it.

    Lovely spacious cottage located within easy travelling distance to Thirsk and York. The cleanliness was of a high standard and it was well equipped. The owners were very friendly, welcoming and helpful.

    Amberleigh cottage was the perfect place to stay. We had deer in the fields and birds in the trees. Great location. Lovely pub across the road as well. The hosts were excellent. Already booked to stay again.

    Great location for visiting local attractions, Helmsley is lovely and there are great walks nearby. We were unable to get a taxi into Thirsk or Helmsley but we were staying weekdays maybe weekends there might be more availability. The local pub is open all day on fri/sat/sun only. We were well stocked up! But it’s handy to know

    Fantastic cottage, we had a great family holiday here. Everyone was happy from the youngest (4) to the oldest (66). We all enjoyed the hot tub and the children especially loved watching the deer in the near by field. The cottage has everything you need and is in a very peaceful location. We all enjoyed a walk around Thirsk especially on market day. Thank you for a great base for our holiday.
