A really disappointing stay. The house was renovated over 20 years ago, and it shows. Definitely in need of a bit of TLC. There were some positives, such as large sofas, a spacious lounge and plenty of parking, however there were lots of little things that let it down. To list a few:- no outside lights (which made it difficult on arrival at 10.30pm), no towels (which is stated in the listing but is just so inconvenient, not even a tea towel is provided), tv remote not working, general areas such as the bathroom skirting board and kitchen surfaces that have seen better days, no firewood so weren’t able to light a fire, a dodgy cafetière and a bed that collapsed when we got in it and had to be propped up with books. Add to this the utter inconvenience of staying in Pooley Bridge at the moment, which is effectively staying in a 7 mile cul-de-sac as the road bridge is closed for urgent repair work for the foreseeable future - this adds half an hour onto every journey you make such as getting to Glenridding or Keswick. There are 3 pubs in Pooley Bridge, but one is closed for refurbishment, we found the staff in the Sun Inn were very friendly. This place has the potential to be really good, but right now there are much better holiday lets available at this price in this area.

I was very excited about Barton School house. The place is very cute albeit the furniture inside needs updating which could bring the cottage back to its potential historical charm. The location is ideal. However, for the value for money, as it wasn’t cheap, the cottage didn’t even provide towels or even bath/shower mats in all shower rooms. It was the first time I ever stayed in a self catering cottage without towels. Luckily we were driving from our house which wasn’t too far so we could bring our own but if you are a traveller from abroad or travelling around the world then you have to bring your own towels. The cottage was clean but not fully checked or cleaned underneath places as there were packages of crisps and left over chocolate under bed and tv units in other room. The TV on the separate room didn’t work and I asked the owner if there was any tricks I should be aware to make it work and the response was far from helpful saying that advice couldn’t be provided from a distance. I wasn’t asking for anyone to come to the cottage.. I asked for some information on how to make it work so grandpa could use the TV and the response was so dismissive and I was so surprised that I didn’t even respond anymore or asked for further assistance. The owner didn’t check in with us later on either to see if problem was solved. We couldn’t make the Tv work for the whole 5 days there in the end. For what the cottage is I would recommend but disappointed with certain aspects as above.

A few issues were kitchen tap kept falling off and a few radiators not heating. Owners were aware but plumber did not attend for repair during the holiday.

Excellent stay despite lots of rain. Central heating ensured the house was always warm and comfortable. No complaints.

A fantastic holiday home. On the edge of beautiful Pooley Bridge and very close to Ullswater. The house is really well equipped and set up for 6 people. Spotlessly clean. Three good bathrooms and a great kitchen. Totally recommend it.

Insufficient bedroom storage. Need 2 front door keys. A few tweaks needed on doors etc. Enjoyed staying here and location was good.
