First the negatives. I am surprised none of the other reviewers have mentioned the squeaky floors and staircase. They are really bad and if you hold the handrail when using the stairs it makes it doubly worse. Even upstairs, which is mostly carpeted, you cannot move about without making a lot of noise, especially during the night if using the toilet.
You need to be careful when using the washbasin in the bathroom as there isn't a grill to stop anything going down the waste pipe. So anything dropped in the basin is likely to go straight down the pipe.
Now the good bits amd there are a lot!
Basil Cottage is a wonderful place to stay if you want peace and quiet. Yes, it is tucked away from the road but you can drive right up to the door and park two cars easily without obstructing the shared driveway with the adjacent farm.
We were very surprised at all the thought that had gone into supplying all the cleaners, dusters, sponge, toilet rolls, kitchen roll, washing-up liquid, hand wash and pouches for the washing machine and dishwasher. The owners had provided some luscious chocolate biscuits and even milk in the fridge, together with tea ags and coffee in the containers near the kettle.
The kitchen is nicely colour coordinated and the crockery, glassware and cutlery were good quality.
The bathroom is beautiful and very clean, in fact spotless. There is plenty of really hot water and the bedrooms have superb duckdown duvets and pillows which are very warm and also colour coordinated. The towels are really thick and great quality.
There is a small flat screen tv in the twin bedroom and a larger one in the double bedroom. The larged bedroom has plenty of drawers and a large hanging wardrobe and there is a nicely placed mirror against one wall giving a full length view. There is also a hairdryer in each bedroom.
There are no windows as such but a Velux opening window in each bedroom which make them both light and airy as they are south facing. You can pull the blinds down to exclude all the light if necessary.
In the open plan lounge/dining room/kitchen there are two large leather settees, one two seater and one three seater with nice cushions on each. The kitchen has a tall freezer and an under-counter fridge, together with a washing machine and dishwasher. There is a nice microwave, kettle and toaster as well as salt, pepper, a breadbin and teatray with cups and saucers, sugar and milk jug. In the cupboards are plenty of matching crockery and glassware, there is also a well stocked gondolier with cookware and more than enough implements and cutlery all spotlessly clean.
A nice touch is the stable door so when the weather permits you can have the top half open whilst keep any little ones inside. Facing south this makes it an ideal warm and sunny spot. There is an outside barbeque and garden bench and a nice grass area which is screened off from the road and nice and private.
We were very surprised at the contents of Basil Cottage, there were dvds under the main tv, Sky in the bedrooms and plenty of pamphlets and leaflets in a container between the settees to browse through. Under the coffee table in the lounge there is a house book with contact phone numbers for the owner and what to do in an emergency together with a wallet containing all the instructions for the various appliances throughout the cottage.
All in all a great place for a relaxing holiday and a lot of thought has gone into supplying all the day to day items you need whilst living there.
I would not hesitate to highly recommend Basil Cottage whilst bearing in mind the squeaky floors and stairs, they really are noisey.
Thank you to the owners.
