Set in the picturesque coastal village of Allonby on the north west coast of Cumbria, this quaint cottage offers a memorable seaside hideaway.
Beachcomber Cottage is one of the original properties within the cobbled streets of this charming village. Once frequented by smugglers, Allonby became an important centre for herring fishing and trade. There is plenty of evidence of its Victorian past from the iconic architecture that can be found around its narrow lanes. If you love the coast, you’ll love this seaside stay. You can cross the quiet coastal road to find a long stretch of sandy beach which is great for a bracing stroll in the sea air. Your four-legged friends are also very welcome at Beachcomber Cottage and with miles of sandy beach that has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is the perfect place to exercise your companions.
Newly decorated for 2018, you’ll find everything you need at Beachcomber Cottage. Upstairs has a lovely double bedroom and a comfortable twin bedroom which makes it ideal for couples and families, along with a modern bathroom. Downstairs has a well-appointed living room which leads to a well-equipped kitchen/dining room and has everything you need for preparing that heart-warming meal after a day of adventure in this beautiful part of Cumbria. Leading from the living room, you find a secret garden with mature plants, flowers and garden furniture, great on a summers afternoon to relax and soak up a bit of sunshine. At night time, you can switch on the fairy lights, light the chiminea and kick back to enjoy the stars in the dark night sky.
Allonby boasts two pubs, a chip shop, two shops and tea rooms, all within a 5-minute walk, including the famous Twentymans Ice Cream Parlour which will be a hit with the children! Just across the coast road you’ll find a children’s playground, football pitch and goals. If you like cycling you can take the Hadrian’s Wall long distance cycle way which offers traffic free cycling from Maryport to Silloth. If you want more rugged adventure you are only 10 miles from the Lake District National Park where you can take on the challenge of any number of the 214 Wainwright fells along with plenty of off road cycling routes. For shopping and sights head into Maryport, just 5 miles away or 16 miles to Bassenthwaite, where you’ll find stunning panoramic views over the lake as well as The Lake District Wildlife Park with over 100 animal species, or The Lakes Distillery offering a day out with tasting tours. If you want seaside, shopping, sightseeing or mountainous rugged adventure, you can have the best of all worlds at Beachcomber Cottage. Beach 175 yards. Delightful little cottage. Unfortunately due to the weather being dreadful we couldn't use the little back garden which had a lovely stove and fairy lights. The owners were very helpful helping us with our luggage and even doing a clothes wash for us. Staircase is very steep so not really suitable for very elderly.

We enjoyed our holiday in Allonby. There was 4 adults and 2 dogs, upstairs was very spacious, great rooms with comfy beds and plenty storage. The bathroom was big with a fantastic tub and shower. However downstairs was slightly more cramped for us all but we managed, probably suit only 2 people rather than 4. The garden was quite wild so sitting out wasn't fun due to wasps and slugs, would be nicer trimmed back. Only main issue we found was in the kitchen, although it's well equipped it was very difficult to cook and eat in there, the smoke alarm kept going off when you tried to cook and there was a really off putting smell from the wall by the fridge, it was so bad we spent our entire time there with the windows wide open to minimize it, so eating out was better. Not having a washing machine was also a nuisance especially with bad weather and wet dogs, there also was no mop to keep floor clean and dry. The owners were friendly. Allonby it's self is lovely.

This is a small, characterful cottage in an unusual village. The owners were great, very friendly and helpful. The cottage had everything we needed for our stay, in all rooms. Very clean, good beds and welcoming. Bonus was the beautiful courtyard garden.

Beachcomber is a pleasant little cottage, with very considerate owners. It is clear they have made an effort to make the cottage cosy and welcoming and it is a comfortable cottage for two, or perhaps a small family, but would probably be cramped for four. The bed was comfortable and there is a large bathroom. The small sitting room leads onto a pretty, but cramped, garden. Unfortunately, the kitchen cupboards and drawers have a fusty, damp smell, which I found off-putting. The cutlery and crockery is quite old, but the kitchen is otherwise well provisioned. We did have to open the windows and close the kitchen door whilst cooking to avoid setting off the fire alarms. The area of Allonby itself seemed a bit desolate and uninspiring. We were looking forward to walking the coastal route - but this is a cycle route beside the road with views of weeds, rather than the coast. The Lake District is, however, stunning, and Ullswater is only an hour's drive from the cottage. The Pooley Bridge area was lovely - and Buttermere (only half an hour away) was a delight. We were also able to view nesting Osprey's at nearby Bassenthwaite. If returning to the area, I would opt to be closer to the lakes, rather than the coast.

Nikki & Stu were lovely, welcoming hosts and the cottage was warm, cosy and comfortable. The wifi was surprisingly very reliable (we often find it is a bit patchy in holiday cottages, but not here!) The bed was very comfy, there was plenty of hot water and a lovely big bathroom. The small kitchen was nicely equipped (I particularly enjoyed the Indian Tree pattern crockery thanks) - I did struggle a bit with the halogen hob, but with a bit more practice I would have got the hang of it. The pretty little garden was filled with bird life and even had a chiminea for anyone wanting to sit outside. Allonby itself is quiet, with a great beach perfect for dog walkers, and with the best fish & chips I've tasted in years just yards from the cottage's front door. Plenty of Roman history within easy reach, great walks from the front door, and The Lakes just a short drive away. Thanks for a perfect stay!

As a couple with a dog we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The owners were very friendly and helpful and we had everything we needed. It would probably feel a little cramped for four people but for us it was just right.
