• About Cae’r Elen

Situated at the heart of the Snowdonia National Park, this cosy retreat has a warming wood burner in the living room to relax in front of with a glass of wine, and a lovely light sun lounge, which is a favourite place for guests to read and simply chill. This beamed cottage has all you need for a comfortable and relaxing break, not least the enclosed south facing garden for summer barbecues. If you want to leave the car at home, why not hop on the train and take a scenic journey on the Conwy Valley line to Llandudno from the local station? Five miles away, Blaenau Ffestiniog is now a thrill seekers delight attracting visitors from all over the world with the amazing Zip World Titan, the world’s largest zip wire zone where you can soar over an old slate quarry, and Bounce Below, where you can bounce on trampoline nets deep in an underground slate cavern. If you’re after something a bit more relaxing, then take a steam train trip on the Ffestiniog Railway on the spectacular journey from Blaenau Ffestiniog down to the coast at Porthmadog (they’ll even serve refreshments at your seat!). The pretty village of Betws-y-Coed, 5 miles, is also well worth a visit, with its individual shops, leafy forest walks, and the amazing Fforest Coaster at Zip World Fforest! I have already provided a 'rider' when asked to add our names to the Visitors' Book. Yes! The cottage was clean and well-stocked. It was well organised even down to counting crockery and cooking utensils. Fortunately we didn't break anything! I left my cardigan behind and even though we don't waste anything, I can afford to treat myself to a new one! Someone had complained about the 'trickle' of a shower but I found it refreshing. Yes, it is a little off the beaten track and although we are pensioners, we were able to manage the 19 steps down to the property. Felt it was a 'bit much' to be asked to strip the beds...I thought the 'cleaning lady' could have done that. Bit like going to the bank and 'they' expect you to do their administration work for them. But again, a minor irritation! On the whole good! Nice selection of C.Ds in my opinion!

Booked this place on a whim and last minute decision to go away so may not have scrutinised listing. Garden is tidyish but lacking a bit and still a work in progress and has bench seat. We do like to “relax” outside so not quite us, but fine for eating with friends if weather allows. Bathroom was clean but time to run bath too long (could not wait and had shower instead) and shower, although adequate, was a quick rinse as we are used to bath or large shower cubicle. Internet very fast and a blessing as I use it to keep in contact with what is happening at work. Kitchen very clean including equipment (frying pan etc almost as new). Dishwasher, full size freezer and fridge, microwave, in fact all we have in our own kitchen so top marks. We drive a Jaguar XF and did park in space but quite tight (easy with smaller car) so opted for parking on road which was about 250 yards away from house by local Spar store. Lounge quite dark due to wall position but lights helped. Bed comfortable with hotel feel including crisp clean linin so top marks here. A few light bulbs not working but spares provided which we did not utilise. First impression excellent with only niggles lowering rating as week went on. Being quite critical but all in all, what made the difference to us was the outside space and bath. This is personal choice and should not deter from choosing this place. Feel that owners take pride in place and do their utmost to ensure good holiday. I would recommend but for ourselves would require more outside space. I suspect a lot has been done and a lot more will be done for the next season.

Although in a lovely rural spot it was very difficult to access up or down a steep road, which was treacherous in the snow. The parking spot was very tight amongst the rocks too. the cottage was down 15 steps or so, which made carrying bags in difficult also in the snow.

This is a very cosy homey place to stay. the location is great with access to most attractions and activities. Nearby Spar corner shop. the property is clean and very thoughtfully equipped with almost everything one needs for a hideaway holiday from music CDs to plenty of games... there is even a new pack of toothbrushes in case you forgot to pack yours. The only two things to be aware of which are not clear from the description are; 1) access to the property is via very narrow lane climbing up hill and the parking space outside the property is good for a Mini or a Smart. If you happen to be driving a big pickup truck like myself or a somewhat wide vehicle, be prepared to show off your diving skills or rub the vehicle in Vaseline because it's really narrow. There is also a quite sharp sharp bend so if your vehicle is long, don't think about it. in all cases you need to pray no other cars are coming in the opposite direction because there is literally no passing point along that lane without trespassing. 2) the access to the cottage itself is via steps leading down. they are not exactly steep but these are smooth slate or similar and we found it very VERY slippery specially in icy conditions. So for elderly, reduced mobility etc. bear this in mind. Apart from that, it's a really nice place and we'd probably go back again.

Ideal base to enjoy all that North Wales has to offer. The cottage was comfortable and the owners helpful. My husband and I enjoyed our stay. The garden is small but secure, which was good for Merlin our dog. Good dog walks from the door.
