Oban has a large selection of shops, leisure facilities including a sports and leisure centre and live traditional music venues. There is a local whisky distillery and overlooking the town is the famous McCaigs Tower. There are some great restaurants and the area is well-known for its seafood and local produce. Oban is known as the ’Gateway to the Isles’ with ferries leaving for Mull and Iona, Coll, Tiree, Colonsay, Lismore and Kerrera. The area of Argyll has so much to offer all ages and interests. To the north there is the Sea Life Centre at Benderloch; the famous ’Hollow Mountain’ at Cruachan is home to a hydro scheme built deep into the mountain and a reservoir high above – a unique attraction for all the family. To the south is Kilmartin Glen, an area rich in historical legacy, offering over 350 ancient monuments to find and explore.
The marvellous countryside, stunning scenery and sea views provide great opportunities to spot wildlife - deer are on the hillside, eagles soaring high in the sky and seals bobbing in the sea. Argyll is fantastic for walkers and climbers with many hill and mountain ranges within the area. For cycling enthusiasts there are miles of forestry tracks to explore. Coastal walks provide great bird watching opportunities, places to launch a canoe/kayak or to try your hand at a spot of sea or loch fishing.
