My husband had booked Caxton nook for a weekend break for our daughter and family as we were staying elsewhere in Windermere. We all found Caxton nook rather dark and gloomy, and in need of a bit of TLC.

Caxton Nook is located very centrally in Windermere close to pubs and restaurants. If driving, handy for the A591 south to Kendal and North to Ambleside. There are parking spaces for all the cottages. Some are holiday let’s and some are rental occupied I think. The parking spot for this cottage is very small. If I had left my vehicle there, no other resident behind me could have got out. I squatted on another space and fortunately they were away for the weekend. The main bedroom suffers from considerable rising damp. When we arrived, you could tell the damp in the room and clothes. We had to leave the window open as much as possible and were lucky that it was very warm and dry. The bathroom is fine with a good shower. The kitchen is oddly shaped but functional. Unless the damp is sorted you should avoid outside the high summer.

Cottage was perfectly situated for amenities and walking into Bowness but having two dogs with us there was nowhere for them to go of a night for toilet and as weather not always pleasant didn't fancy walking round streets looking for grass!! also parking was rather "tight", had to park right under bedroom window and "tuck" the car in as much as possible to allow other vehicles to pass, did damage front of car on very low wall as it was a tight squeeze turning round so could drive out of driveway instead of backing out as straight onto a busy road. Did have couple of problems with heating and pipes "knocking" during night, did get chap out but couldn't stop the "knocking" which keep us awake somewhat, plus not sure what or who were above us but not the quietest, were up and about early!!! Also taps in kitchen were very hard to switch on and off and as I have arthritis in hands struggled to use them ie fill kettle and wash dishes, just needed a little adjustment I think. Did say there was Freeview but there was a very limited amount of freeview available? not sure why ? as weather turned really wet we stayed in a cottage couple days as would have liked a little more choice of viewing. Found the cottage a little dark having to have lights on in hallway most of time and kitchen also had to have lights on when in there but comfortable otherwise and as I said ideally situated for amenities and motorway.

On the whole the cottage was ideal, good size sitting room very comfy. We'll equipped kitchen, small area where dining table was, but we managed. Beds very comfortable. Everywhere clean, biggest plus point. Down points. If you drive anything bigger than a fiesta you can't park at the cottage, which bearing in mind the bigger car had all the heavy stuff. 2 dogs allowed great, just no garden, patio area very small. We still coped with all this. The big negative was the bathroom. Shower got you you wet, but the shower curtain would stick to you. The toilet was a nightmare. Scared to leave a square of toilet roll incase it backed up! It did get a bit dodgy at times. We still had a great weekend and very relaxed (except the toilet).

The cottage is cosy, homely and full of character. It is generally spacious and clean and is in a fantastic location to access the amenities of Windermere town centre, with Bowness a 20-30 minute walk away. The kitchen is pretty well equipped, with fridge, freezer, washing machine (although this was out of order when we stayed), cooking utensils etc. The shower was good and the spa bath a nice surprise. It would be even better to know that feedback from customers is being acted upon, as I agree with other reviewers about the shortage of cutlery and the issues with the heating, which seemed to be on permanently (in a hot July) and no instructions on how to control it or set a timer. Turning down the thermostat made only a small difference. Perhaps some "guest information" inside the cottage might be helpful on this topic? One of the most important things to note, is that if you have anything other than a very small car, the "dedicated parking space" is no good. Be aware! However, despite this, the cottage was certainly very comfortable with lots of charm and we certainly enjoyed our stay, which is why I've still given it a high rating.

A comfortable and spacious ground floor apartment, in a pleasant and convenient location, close to the centre of Windermere. The lounge is a good size. The only issue we had was with the central heating. The apartment was nice and warm when the heating was on, but it didn't come on early enough in the mornings for us and went off too early in the evenings, and we couldn't find out how to control it.

Caxton nook was a very comfortable place to stay. The beds were very comfortable. Everything works, heating, good WiFi, tv etc. However, the whole place would benefit from an upgrade and redecoration, there was evidence of damp in the kitchen/dining area, hence my value for money score.

As a couple we enjoyed our short break here over Christmas. The cottage was lovely and warm. It would have been nice to have been able to use the open fire but only one token log was provided. We were happy enough with the facilities provided but feel that had we been four adults the dining space would have felt very cramped. There was also very little spare crockery and cutlery.
