    Located only 6 miles from the historic city of York, this cottage is part of a group which has been renovated to an extremely good standard having been equipped and furnished with quality fittings and fixtures. Tasteful co-ordinating soft furnishings have been used, and each light, bright property has a cosy open fire set in an attractive red brick surround. Attached to most of the properties is a lovely private patio and lawned garden, making it a great place for younger children to play; barbecues, portable paddling pools and outdoor toys are available. There is a spacious conservatory to relax in which opens onto a large enclosed lawned area for sunnier days. For the more energetic there is a full sized outdoor tennis court, games room and children’s play area.

    Claxton Grange is a perfect base for exploring all the historic attractions of York, including the large medieval minster with its wealth of stained glass. Take a walk along the city walls or visit the Jorvik Viking Centre where the spirit of the Vikings is held captive for all time. Nowhere tells the story of the train better than the National Railway Museum from Stephenson’s Rocket to Eurostar. Art galleries, museums, and guided trips on the River Ouse - why not try the Ghost Cruise on an evening? York has top quality shopping, excellent restaurants and bistros and old timber-framed pubs serving wholesome food and real cask ales. Within easy driving distance is the busy market town of Pickering and the North York Moors beyond. A little further afield are the many seaside resorts and pretty fishing villages along the east coast. Alternatively access to the Yorkshire Dales National Park will take no time at all. We have stayed at Claxton Grange before (six years ago) and found quite a deterioration this time. Nothing that a bit of TLC couldn't cure. Shabby kitchen units/radio not working/ mirror not on wall to name a few. It's a real shame that the swimming pool is no longer in use, it was a real asset. However, for what we paid, for a week in July, to be that close to York in a pleasant enough environment it was ok. But with a bit more investment it could be a real gem. If you are looking for a no frills holiday near York at a good price go ahead. Beds/towels/bathroom/kitchen were clean.

There were a few niggles when we arrived but these were sorted out promptly. Had missed dusting some areas and found half eaten biscuits in cupboard. Cottage looked to need some tlc. This could be due to the fact that new owners were due to take over on the 8th May so hopefully they will spruce up the complex However we have stayed here before and the location is excellent for York and surrounding areas, and would probably look to stay here again in the future.

We had a nice week at the cottage. It was roomy and there was lots of kitchen equipment and other things you would need. Lots of hit water too. We also appreciated the washing up equipment. It needed some repairs and a bit of TLC and the children's play area needed some considerable repairs. Overall it was a nice complex, good value and we would go go back.

The cottage was in a good location close to York and Castle Howard with nearby supermarkets, petrol stations and places to eat. It was in a pretty location. But the property itself was in need of a deep clean- we felt that it had only been cleaned superficially. And it needed re-decorating and some new furniture. It all felt a bit dated and unloved.
