Within walking distance there are local shops, galleries and of course several outlets for superb quality knitwear which is still produced in the town. Hill walking throughout the Scottish Borders is plentiful and varied, with several circular routes and waymarked paths suitable for all abilities. Other outdoor pursuits including fishing, golf, cycling and horse riding are all available nearby. The towns of Kelso, Melrose and Jedburgh, all under 30 minutes’ drive, have historic abbeys, many galleries, local food producers and good choices in coffee and lunch stops.
