Heading 4 miles east is the picture-perfect coastal village of Alnmouth where there is a gorgeous golden sandy beach. A short drive west brings you to the small town of Rothbury, found nestled at the foot of the Simonside Hills and where the River Coquet ebbs and flows. A pleasant trip North brings you to the ever so popular fishing village of Seahouses; start with a stroll around the idyllic harbour, then hop on a boat out to the Farne Islands, ideal for wildlife lovers where you can observe the puffins and seals relaxing on the rocks. Walkers and cyclists can join the coastal path in either direction to further explore the picturesque coastline. Head further north to discover miles of magnificent sandy beaches, as well as the village of Bamburgh, which is known for its dominant hilltop castle, overlooking the sea, along with its lighthouse, museums, and golf club.
A short drive along the coast will take you to the fishing village of Craster, with its lovely family-friendly beach and nearby attraction of the 14th century Dunstanburgh Castle, owned by the National Trust. Cosy Cottage makes an extremely comfortable base from which to explore the beautiful 20-mile stretch of Northumberland Heritage coastline, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the east, and the wild and lonely expanses of the heather-capped Cheviot Hills to the west.
