• About Craigcaffie Tower

A wonderful castle tower looking out over its own grounds, making a real romantic getaway location!

Live like a laird in this historic, fairytale Scottish castle which is set within delightful gardens - a simply stunning holiday location! Early in the 16th century, Robert the Bruce gifted the lands of Craigcaffie to his illegitimate son, Neil, Earl of Carrick, from whom the Neilsons were descended. The Neilsons built the castle in 1570, and its hall, now the living room, is an impressive, yet cosy room, with a truly magnificent original inglenook fireplace. With a ‘wee dram’ in your hand, you can just imagine yourself as the laird of the castle! The romance of Craigcaffie Tower will take your breath away, and original features abound, including a barrel vaulted ceiling in the dining room, inglenook fireplaces in the bedrooms (ornamental only), original doors with low doorways, and turnpike stairs with rope handrails. This enchanting castle makes the perfect retreat, hidden away in a peaceful location, yet within walking distance to the coast. If the weather is fine, you can take in the view from the castellated sentry walks that can be accessed from the third floor.
Stranraer is an ideal holiday base: not only can you explore this unspoilt area of Dumfries and Galloway, but you can also reach the rugged Ayrshire coastline or take a day trip to Ireland. This location is surrounded by breathtaking scenery, and there are many beautiful gardens to explore, including the world renowned Logan Botanical Gardens. The area boasts many pretty little ports like Sandhead, Portpatrick and the RSPB Scotland Mull of Galloway Nature Reserve, where thousands of seabirds nest in the cliff face during the spring and summer. Walking is a delight, whether it is strolling along the clifftop, beaches, hills or forests, and the Southern Upland Way also passes close by. It is also a cyclist’s paradise with the world famous 7Stanes within easy reach. If you prefer shooting or golf, there are many facilities nearby including the course in Stranraer and the county course is just a short drive away. Shops, pubs and restaurants 3 miles.

Staying in Craigcaffie Tower was a unique experience. It has a long history which the friendly and helpful owner explained to us upon arrival. Whilst situated just a few hundred yards from the A75, the grounds seem huge and wonderfully peaceful. The tower itself has 4 levels, with a spiral stone staircase linking them - so this isn't a place for people with mobility issues. The barrel roofed kitchen has a large wooden table to gather for meals and all the usual appliances. The lounge, with its two comfortable settees and wood burner, was a pleasant place to relax in the evening or when the weather wasn't so good. Sitting in the garden in the sunshine after a nice BBQ was wonderful. As for the local area, there are plenty of walks and places to visit - Castle Kennedy gardens were nice. Stranraer itself has everything you're likely to need in terms of supplies, etc. To sum up, if you're looking for a place to unwind in a unique historic building then I would definitely recommend Craigcaffie Tower.

It was a unique experience to stay in a medieval tower. The stone stairs can be challenging when you are older and it can be cold inside if you hit s cold spell. We loved the stay and would consider returning. Michele and John provided starter food and throws to keep us warm- great hosts. We hope to be back as the Stranraer area has much to do and great restaurants.

This is an amazing place in an amazing setting. Truly quirky and historical. A very magical Place. It’s such a shame as Unfortunately, our holiday experience was let down by poor cleanliness in the kitchen and bathroom areas. Other areas like the upstairs bedrooms are outdated and need attention. For the money paid we expected a better standard

A super location and wonderful quirky place to stay. The dogs were in heaven and were safe in the garden. Great hosts and the men enjoyed the chance to go clay pigeon shooting.

Host were fantastic , warm welcome and their reccomendations for things to do in the area and where to eat was spot on. Craigcaffie Tower has so much character and history it's quite an experience staying there. The turnpike stairs, low doorways and stone fireplaces are constant reminders of the Tower's history but it also has all the comforts of a modern home. The extensive private gardens are perfect for outdoor games and relaxing. There's even a small games room with darts and a pool table. We had a warm welcome and guided tour from the owner, John, who did everything possible to help us enjoy our stay. We enjoyed exploring the area, walking, cycling and visiting local gardens and castles.
