The setting overlooking the Sound of Harris is truly jaw-dropping! It’s honestly one of the best views on the island, and that’s saying something! Craigstore is a perfect Harris base.

The journey to Craigstore is a memorable adventure and one to savour. Driving and ferrying to the Isle of Harris is highly recommended, and there are many exciting routes that you can take. A brilliant way to reach the cottage is via the Isle of Skye then crossing the Minch to Tarbert on Harris. You’ll then enjoy a spectacular drive south along the sandy, well-known west coast of Harris to reach Leverburgh and Craigstore.
Your arrival at Craigstore will be one of wonder. The setting is out of this world being only a stone’s throw away from the sea. The views from the cottage are to die for as you look out over the Leverburgh boats moored up in a rocky inlet, out across the many islands that dot the Sound of Harris all the way to Berneray and North Uist. Many a time you’ll pause whilst at Craigstore and watch the Sound of Harris ferry make its way to and fro, between Leverburgh and Berneray. Incidentally, Berneray is an excellent little island with fabulous beaches of its own, and nice places to eat and drink; it makes for a great day trip. Craigstore is an excellent base to make the most of Harris! You’re only a few minutes walk from the ferry terminal and the inviting Anchorage café & restaurant. What’s really exciting about this proximity to the port, is that you’re so close to the boat that sails to isolated, mysterious St Kilda, over 50 miles west of Harris in the North Atlantic. Previously inhabited, St Kilda is both a cultural and natural UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Craigstore is one of the best places to access this world-famous nautical journey. A little further on from your local village of Leverburgh, to the west are the sandy beaches of Harris. Starting with Scarista and reaching to the well-known but still deserted Luskentyre, you’ll no doubt want to spend as much time as possible exploring each bay of sand. Views to Taransay where Castaway 2000 was filmed, and the North Harris mountains are incredible. So too is the colour of the sand and water! The east coast of Harris, also easily accessible from Craigstore, is completely different from the west. It’s rocky, rugged, but sheltered from the Atlantic, so there are many little, historic communities dotted along the bays. You must journey north to Lewis and explore its many fantastic sights, including Uig Bay and the Callanish Standing Stones. Book to stay and enjoy an adventure that you’ll remember forever!
