Cumberland House is set in the peaceful picturesque village of Orton which boasts two churches, one pub, one shop and the world famous Kennedy’s chocolate factory and every second Saturday in the month there is a farmers market. Orton is on the Coast to Coast walk and there are plenty of walks from Orton as well as many excellent pub/restaurants within a 10-minute drive. Wainwright described Orton as ’one of Westmorland’s loveliest villages’. One thing is certain, Orton has a soul and a very big heart. Shop 50 yards, pub and restaurant 150 yards.

Beautiful cottage in an ideal location to explore The Lakes. The cottage has been lovingly restored to a high standard. Very well equipped with four good sized bedrooms. Would definitely come back again.

Generally god but a few thing requrie attention, eg no egg cups and a limited collection of enormous pans making cooking a little difficult.

Lovely cottage plenty of room for two families sharing. Peaceful village although there was a road right outside it wasn't particularly busy at the time we were there. Nice to have a starter pack of cleaning products, tea coffee and biscuits. The children enjoyed the park a short walk away. Would recommend ideal for walkers or two families sharing.

The house was very clean and comfortable with all the necessary things. There were basic things (hand soap, toilet rolls for immediate use, biscuits, tea, coffee etc) which were very nice as didn’t need to go immediately to shop. The area was very pleasant. However, one thing which impacted negatively on our trip was the top toilet which had some issues. On the first day of arrival, we noticed that the upstairs toilet tap was not working and I reported it immediately. In a house this is normal so we were not concerned and gave the benefit of doubt that maybe it was not reported before. However, it was not fixed until the 5th day of our arrival. The last day while taking shower upstairs, the electric shower also stopped suddenly in the middle of the shower. The day before even though the shower was being taken inside the cabin with no water coming out, there was some water which leaked through the bathroom ceiling to downstairs bedroom light. Thus, we wondered if there was a leak in the tiles or shower cabinet. However, we couldn’t see anything.

The photos do not do your wonderful property justice. A perfect layout, nicely fitted with comfortable beds, in the most idyllic location. A pub a very short walk away with very friendly staff, a post office and general store and a chocolate shop! Dog walks nearby (on the lead as lambing season) and a perfect little playground for younger visitors. Garden was perfect for a cheeky glass of wine in the sunshine. A great base for exploring the area - or not!

Amazing barn conversion, everything top quality, bedding towels etc all five star, just what you would expect in a five star hotel. So much space for two families. Interesting history etc left by owner to share with us, they must be so proud of their achievements. Sincerely hope that people respect it, love sweat and tears gone into this and if it were mine I would not want to let it out. Area stunning and village so quaint and people really friendly , especially on the Thursday bus trip to Kendal, which is a classy little town. Love to come back again. So much to see and do and a week is not enough.
