Private parking for 2 cars. No smoking. \n\n Set on the quay walls this apartment boasts views over the harbour and iconic railway bridge. Spread over two floors with a shared internal staircase and an enormous living room which opens directly onto the quay walls. Careful restoration has revealed original decoration in the imposing hall and the kitchen is barrel vaulted. The building dates from 1749 when it was a merchants’ house used for trading rum and mackerel from the warehouses below the house on the quayside. It has had a chequered history finally becoming the local custom and excise house but it is now back to its spectacular origins as a welcoming holiday home.\nEnjoy a leisurely wander around the Elizabethan ramparts interspersed by re-fuelling stops in the good cafes or local bars. Visit Berwick Barracks museum and gallery and walk along the Lowry Trail. Nearby Paxton House and the 18th-century Palladium Stately Home is ideal for an afternoon. For the outdoor enthusiast take to the Cheviot Hills for more strenuous walks. Edinburgh is just 40 minutes by train or a leisurely drive along the coast to take in Dunbar and North Barwick. Beach 0.8 miles. Shop 110 yards pub and restaurant 90 yards. " https://img.chooseacottage.co.uk/Property/106/840/10645233.jpg UK3303

We had a wonderful Christmas week at Custom House-staying in this truly special and beautiful home. The property has everything you need and the welcome bottle of prosecco was a lovely touch as were all of the Christmas decorations. The owners have created an 'home from home' stay with everything you need in the kitchen and in general. Thank you for letting us have the opportunity to enjoy such a special and historic building. We hope to stay again in the future.

Lacked the touches to make you feel welcome. Not even a teabag and milk to make a cuppa on arrival. No bins on living floor. Although we knew bathroom was separate it was through a fire door which banged every time-not nice at 1am. No dressing gowns provided for decency which would have been a nice touch. No hairdryer. And we also found the property for sale in local estate agent so be aware if you book it may not be honoured.

The Customs House is in an enviable position on the Quay Walls, which gives good views, a quiet position yet an easy walk into town. The bedroom and the sitting room are spacious, comfortable and beautifully furnished. The kitchen and bathroom are on the floor below - it should be noted that this staircase is shared with the owner, which means, at night, getting dressed and heading down, which was not ideal for us.

Love Berwick for its history and quirky old school charm. The cottage is on the historic town walls in prime position to view the 3 famous bridges over the Tweed. The Custom House itself is an important part of this history and the owners have sensitively restored it to its original splendour.

Accommodation very good but for the less mobile or more advanced in years the bathroom is down 2 flights of stairs. Not very convenient in the middle of the night.

Very historic style of accommodation, very spacious and clean. The location is fantastic for exploring historic Berwick-on-Tweed, with it's barracks, wall walk and riverside walks. Several restaurants are in easy walking distance and there are several pubs, which were lively at the weekend. The down sides are; steps and steep slopes around Berwick - access to the front door of the property is via two flights of granite steps. Steps inside the property, because it is on two levels, the kitchen and bathroom are down stairs from the bedroom and living room (a little in convenient for loo visits in the early hours- though apparently this may change to the bathroom being on the same level). The steps inside the property are well carpeted and comfortable and safe to walk on.
