    Set on the quay walls, this apartment boasts views over the harbour and iconic railway bridge. Careful restoration has revealed original decoration in the imposing hall, and the kitchen is barrel vaulted. The building dates from 1749 when it was a merchants’ house used for trading rum and mackerel from the warehouses below the house on the quayside. It has had a chequered history, finally becoming the local custom and excise house, but it is now back to its spectacular origins as a welcoming holiday home.
    Enjoy a leisurely wander around the Elizabethan ramparts, interspersed by re-fuelling stops in the good cafes or local bars. Visit Berwick Barracks museum and gallery, and walk along the Lowry Trail. Nearby, Paxton House and the 18th-century Palladium Stately Home is ideal for an afternoon. For the outdoor enthusiast, take to the Cheviot Hills for more strenuous walks. Edinburgh is just 40 minutes by train, or a leisurely drive along the coast to take in Dunbar and North Barwick. Beach 0.8 miles. Shop 110 yards, pub and restaurant 90 yards.
