Cyplau is a picturesque, honeysuckle clad, Welsh rural retreat nestling in an elevated position and backed by woodland on the edge of Llanbedr village. There are beautiful views over the extensive landscaped garden with glimpses of the sea from the bedroom windows.
The cottage originates from the 18th century when it was two gamekeepers cottages. It has now been converted into a stylish, warm and cosy property with old beams. The name Cyplau (pronounced Cup-lie) is Welsh for coupled.
Within the acre garden are meandering paths giving access to several seating areas, many rare plants, topiary, culinary beds, hillside terraces and a green house tended by the owner who lives in the grounds. In the winter it is full of designed shapes whilst in the summer it is a mass of colour and scent. To make life easy there are ready prepared meals using ingredients from the garden in the freezer which can be purchased on an honesty basis.
The village is a 5 minute walk with local shops, bike hire, delicatessen/cafe and traditional inns serving pub food and real ales. Every September there is a popular beer festival and over the May bank holiday there is the North Wales Garden Festival with 22 gardens open to the public. Outdoor activities are numerous with easy or challenging walks straight from the cottage along rushing rivers into the mountains or along the sandy coastline. Within a 5 minute drive the shoreline provides beautiful and uncrowded beaches at Llandanwg and Harlech. There are regular guided beach walks, rock pools, a small harbour, an activity centre and a beach cafe all providing days of fun and freedom for all the family.
The Rhinog Mountains provide a stunning backdrop to the village which lies within the Snowdonia National Park. It is a perfect base to discover hidden places by foot or in the car. Renowned for its mountains such as Tryfan and Cader Idris, lakes, panoramic views, shoreline, historic castles and remoteness there is also an abundance of wildlife to identify. Snowdon, the second highest peak in the UK can be walked or ascended using the famous mountain train.
There is an array of places to visit and things to do in north Wales. Close by impressive medieval Harlech Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Royal St David’s golf course is a 10 minute drive. Further afield there are several narrow gauge steam railways such as the Ffestiniog, Welsh Highland and Tallylyn. The quirky Italianate village of Portmeirion is an architectural gem set in Mediterranean style gardens with excellent dining facilities. The Centre for Alternative Technology, a nationally acclaimed environmental attraction, is a 40 minute drive. For active youngsters there is Zip World with the biggest zip wire in the world and Bounce Below, numerous trampolines in a massive slate cavern, and with old slate quarries at Llechwedd there is always something to do whatever the season. Shop 1½ miles, pub 500 yards, restaurant 3 miles.

We really couldn't fault this place. We've stayed in lots of cottages over the years and this has to be one of the nicest: spacious, comfortable almost a home from home. If you like cooking, then the kitchen was one of the best equipped I've seen for a holiday cottage, so the box of kitchen stuff I usually bring was redundant Jackie couldn't have been more hospitable leaving us some lovely home-made goodies to enjoy plus bread, eggs and milk to see us through the first few days. We hope to stay again in spring next year.

From the initial phone call to Jackie informing of her of our arrival time to the time we said goodbye to her and Gracie we couldn’t fault the cottage. The cottage is in a lovely location for both those looking to visit the ‘seaside’ or walk in the hills. Everything has been thought of by Jackie, a lovely basket of goodies on arrival and even some lovely cakes!!! Gracie made herself at home and we all miss her. If what you are looking for is a ‘home from home’ base from which to explore this part of Wales you’ve found it. Nothing is too much trouble for Jackie and the cottage was exactly what we were looking for. With 2 adult ‘children’ there was adequate space and they could escape from the parents at every opportunity. The gardens are stunning and the cottage so very peaceful. We would not hesitate recommending this cottage.

We initially booked this cottage based upon the existing high reviews. However, compared to the cottage we had stayed in the previous week, with a similar rating, it fell short of expectations. The cottage had an infestation of spiders and although modernised there were a number of short cuts such as the exposed fuse box in the kitchen and other areas. The plumbing wasn't great and the cleanliness in the kitchen [i.e. extractor fan was caked up with grease], which when used created lingering smells in the kitchen. The sofa had a few stains and wasn't inviting. As a consequence, we spent less time at the cottage than we would normally do. On a positive note the garden was very well maintained and there was an enjoyable walk at the back of the property.
