Parts of the existing pele tower may date from the 11th century and the rest of the house was built in the early 14th and 18th centuries with the 18th-century wing rebuilt in the early part of the 20th century. The pele tower was rebuilt around 1310 as a watchtower for the nearby Dunstanburgh Castle which was then being constructed. The unusual crowstepped top floor of the tower was created in the 16th century when the then owners were no longer worried about maintaining defensive strength and it was converted into a pigeon loft. Some of the fireplaces and stonework come from the lost Tudor house of Gloster Hill. There are spectacular coastal views to the east towards Dunstanburgh Castle. The beautiful beach at Embleton Bay is a mile or so north along a pretty bridleway. An excellent holiday base to enjoy the marvellous beaches dunes and walks of the Northumberland coast. There is a wealth of historical and recreational sites including Alnwick Castle and Garden Bamburgh Holy Island Farne Islands Warkworth and the Cheviot Hills. Craster itself is world famous for its kippers. Golf available locally.     This is a wonderful property which was perfect for our group. It is fully equipped and very comfortable though took a little time to heat up when we first arrived in the November climate. The kids had a ball finding places to hide and play. The adults enjoyed the amazing dining room and cozy sitting room.

    A family get together for the week. Everyone loved the house especially the children. Some of the bedrooms are off other bedrooms which is creat for family groups with children but could be a challenge for all adult groups. Fantastic location for local attractions.

    Lovely old house - our week wasn't perhaps representative as we had torrential rain just before our holiday which caused a leak at the house and on the last day one of the electrical circuits failed, leaving us without power in most of the downstairs of the house. There were one or two small improvements which could be made - bigger kitchen bin, more than one kitchen sink, a sweeping brush, bigger towels and somewhere to store bikes would have been helpful - but overall the house was great, the living spaces were very comfortable and the piano was fab and well used - the house could do with more games in the games room - the table football is broken and perhaps table tennis or pool would be a better option?
