A perfect start to the birding year surrounded by migratory birds and many others! We manage to get a group together but I still feel sorry for individuals who do not want to hire accommodation for 12 and have been used to being able to book a room and share the farmhouse.

Everything a group of birdwatching friends could wish for. No local amenities which was another plus - major supermarket happy to deliver online shopping. Friendly WWT staff.

Such a beautiful place to stay. Comfortable, warm and well-furnished. Very clean and tidy. The views are spectacular and the wildlife surrounds you. Well maintained, but still authentic, the farmhouse is very cosy and a great place to get friends together for bird watching and exploring the local area. It was great to have the nature reserve to explore when not open to general visitors, and the badger feed from the farmhouse viewing gallery was a nightly highlight. We even saw an otter from the viewing gallery too! Such a treat. We were a party of 11 and there was plenty of room for all to get together, as well as enough rooms for people to not feel on top of each other. The kitchen was great for cooking as a group and we all fitted easily around the kitchen table. The welcome scones on arrival were a nice touch. Overall, an excellent venue. Cannot wait to come and stay again.

We enjoyed a lovely stay at the farmhouse. The accommodation was very comfortable and everywhere was very clean. The showers were great. The setting is absolutely stunning with views of ducks, geese and swans and badgers visiting in the evening. We could have done with a few more large saucepans in the kitchen as we were catering for 11.

The location is absolutely unique. We were were privileged to have access to the observation which is attached to the house, from which we could look across the Solway Firth to the Lake District. At dawn and dusk we watched up to 20,000 barnacle geese filling the sky, looking for morning grazing and evening roosting sites. The sound of the geese in the air is wonderful.. Add to this, the whooper swans, freshly arriving from Iceland landing the pond in front of the conservatory and badgers outside the conservatory in the evening. The house itself is warm and comfortable with good facilities. Attention has been paid to detail. There is a cafe on the reserve which is open in the daytime. If you want an urban experience, this is not the place for you. It is fairly remote, but with a car, you can visit the hometown of Burns or the handsome caerlaverock castle and beyond. There is a walk along the marsh to the castle. It is a privilege to be able to stay in the heart of a nature reserve. We did have beautiful weather so it was very easy to be out of doors.
