    > Crakeld Holm enjoys a most picturesque location in the Eden Valley, which is on the eastern side of Cumbria, on the fringe of the Lake District. It nestles in an idyllic, scenic, rural setting overlooking the beautiful River Eden. It is renovated, furnished and presented to a high standard and is equipped with super-fast broadband with a wireless download speed of approximately 30Mb/s. The property was originally a sandstone bank barn dating from the 18th century but is now transformed into a fabulous detached four-bedroom house. Much of the original character has been retained, in particular the main entrance with its lovely sandstone archway which leads into the original upper hayloft. This is now a dramatic open-plan living area and kitchen with traditional slit windows, hefty timber beams and high ceiling. The room itself is a showstopper, only bettered by the wonderful southerly view from the French windows and balcony out over the river and viaduct beyond.

Eden is a haven for peace, tranquillity and a vast variety of wildlife, perfect for ornithologists and country lovers. It is an outstanding area for walking, whether for a hike on the high open fells or a gentle riverside stroll. Cyclists will love the quiet country lanes and the C2C cycle route. Outdoor activities don’t stop here - why not try canoeing on Ullswater (10 miles), a spot of fishing on the doorstep for trout, salmon and grayling (by prior arrangement with the owners), pony trekking or golf in Penrith (6 miles). There are attractions for the whole family including a cruise on Ullswater, or a ride on a restored railway high in the North Pennines! Surrounded by dramatic landscapes including Ullswater and the north eastern fells, it is also close to both the borders of Scotland and the Yorkshire Dales. This secluded and unspoilt destination will inspire, rejuvenate and refresh visitors at any time of the year. A lively calendar of events adds to a holiday here with festivals of all kinds, country and craft fairs, farmers’ markets, and traditional agricultural shows to name just a few. Shops 3 miles, pub 1 mile.

Very spacious, comfortable house with excellent views. Very quiet location right next to the river. Mattresses could do with renewing but otherwise all amenities excellent.

Crakeld Holm is beautifully set in a wonderful location. The house was perfect for four generations of our family. Lots of space to unwind, lovely views and great walks from the door.

This is by far the best cottage in the UK and that is the exact reason that I go there either with my friends or my family evey year. This year I noticed that there were a lot of flies in the house, some dead on the floor & others trapped in spider webs all over the cieling. It does need a good spring clean

This is our second stay in this property in two years. The location is fantastic giving solitude, relaxation and unrivalled views. Overall the barn conversion has been completed to as very high standard and the facilities such as the kitchen and bathrooms are modern and very well presented. However, small details have made this stay less pleasurable than our previous one. In particular, cleaning in some areas could be improved. There are large numbers of spider webs in the rafters of the living room and other areas which are full of dead flies. These were present in our last stay and do not appear to have been removed since last time and are now larger. (Other guests commented on this in the visitor book.) The living room, stairs and main bedroom had not been properly vacuumed before our arrival. There were lots of crumbs in the living room by the sofa, dead flies on the stairs and flies and dust/fluff on the carpet in the bedroom. (The visitor book confirmed that the house had been occupied not long before our arrival so the property had not been empty for an extended period.) Other bedrooms were cleaner than the main bedroom. We vacuumed these areas ourselves after arriving. This only took a few minutes, but this should not be something that guests should feel the need to have to do. Some light bulbs in the living area were either blown or missing and a couple of the lamps did not appear to be working. Also, there were no dishwasher tablets and very little washing up liquid. Whilst we appreciate that the owners are not responsible for providing all cleaning equipment, if a dishwasher is provided it is our experience in other rental properties that at least enough tablets are normally provided for a couple of days until a trip to the local supermarket can be made. Finally, there was a musty smell in the main bedroom which got worse when it rained. Water also dripped through the ceiling above the French doors during heavy rain. This is an exceptional property in a unique setting. A lot of care and thought has gone in to the conversion, with high standards of workmanship evident. Good information is provided by the owners, access is good and the local area has lots to offer. It is a real shame that what could be a memorable vacation rental has been slightly tarnished by details which, in the main, would not require a huge amount of time or money to rectify.

Lovely cottage in a beautiful location. Cottage is well equipped , beds are comfy. Wifi worked quite well as well. Only downside for us was the amount of dead fly carcasses suspended in spider webs in the corners of the ceiling. Bedrooms are downstairs so Be aware if you do go with children, they can hear everything. Kids complained they could hear us adults talking and laughing. We did wake up one morning to find a bat flying around room, but we managed to get it out .Walks along the river with the kids, 9,8,6 and 3 years old was fabulous. Lowther Castle is well worth a visit, and of course any of the lakes.
