Hayton Castle is the main property on Edmond Castle Estate and is a family home as it was for most of its history, with occasional changes of use during the 20th century. The current owners have refurbished some of the estates properties into luxurious self-catering accommodation which will appeal to the most discerning guests, allowing the opportunity to stay on this historical site, close to Hadrian’s Wall. Whatever your party size there is a cottage to suit, with properties sleeping anything from 4 – 10 guests. The Peele Tower is the oldest building on the estate, dating to around 1603, when in the hands of the Howard family, the castle was designed by the renowned architect Sir Robert Smirke and built between 1824 and 1829. Each ‘cottage’ is superbly equipped and luxuriously furnished to ensure a relaxing stay. There is a small lake in the grounds with an abundance of birdlife and footpaths to the surrounding countryside. Edmond Castle is situated 7 miles east of the Historic city of Carlisle, outside the village of Hayton and is ideally situated to visit the Scottish Borders, the Eden Valley, the Lake District and Hadrian’s Wall. There is a golf course nearby, fishing on the River Eden, good restaurants locally and a great shopping centre in Carlisle.
The Peele Tower is the oldest building on the estate, built at the time of the Anglo Scottish feuds. It is laid out over 4 floors with a steep narrow staircase befitting of the period and a fantastic turreted roof terrace with fabulous panoramic views of the estate.

Very comfortable and well-equipped, it can’t really be called a cottage, as it’s a tower. This means one room on each floor, and lots of winding stairs between. Upside: stunning views from the top of the tower. Downside: not for those who have problems with stairs. As long as you’re aware of that, it’s worth making the effort! Lovely kitchen/diner on the ground floor, with a cosy sitting area. Three large and one small windows, so plenty of light. Up to a spacious sitting room, with small loo tucked away round a corner. Then next two floors with a bedroom and ensuite on each. Beautiful period details throughout, but fittings suitably modern. Very quiet and peaceful. Large pond just down some stone steps. Lovely for a quick morning walk, plenty of wildlife to be seen: hordes of pheasants running off into the underbrush, wren, squirrels. Attractive walk along a river gorge at Gelt Woods close by. Also close to the village of Brampton, with church designed by the Pre-Raphaelites, which has stained-glass windows designed by Burne-Jones. Large antique barn next to the church, with lots of interesting finds. A short drive to Carlisle, where the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery is definitely worth a visit. Very impressed with this property.

Fantastic property and highly recommended for anyone wanting somewhere a little different. Beautifully appointed with care taken in all the decor. Even the 60 steps to the rooftop terrace didn't put us off!

Brilliant accommodation. Comfortable and quirky. Really enjoyed our stay. Spotlessly clean & kitchen well equipped. Great little touches like milk in the fridge and tea, coffee & biscuits just made it feel so welcoming And you get to stay in a castle tower!

The Peele Tower is beautiful, a well equipped kitchen, clean, spacious, well kept and wonderfully quirky. It has everything you need for your break (even tea, coffee & Sugar). This place is so immaculate you would think they had decorated it just before your arrival! Only a short drive to Carlisle for shopping, Castle, Museum & Art Gallery. If like our 7 year old you enjoy Roman history then Vindolanda & Roman Army Museum are great and not too far. I can not recommend this property and location highly enough, it's one of the best holiday rentals we have ever had! Perfection!

Really great place to spend some time. Roof top terrace is brilliant. Would be even better if one of the bedrooms would have two single beds, so kids can sleep more conveniently.

Had a great time at the Tower. Everything you could want. The only issues related to a loss of water in the shower at times, plus a little more attention to detail with the cleaning. However overall this was a great place for a holiday.
