It is only a few minutes’ drive from the town centre where there are restaurants to suit all tastes swimming pools sport centres multiplex cinema theatre museum pubs and shops. Falkirk is very much a year round destination the perfect place for the perfect holiday The area immediately surrounding the cottage is rich in history. It sits on the Bantaskine Estate and was originally the gardener’s lodge. The old house is no longer there but its large stained glass window is now part of the shopping centre.\n\nBantaskine Estate was home to one of Falkirk’s best known and influential Victorians John Wilson. At the age of 21 John took over his father’s coal pit business. His father Robert had started the successful business in Banton near Kilsyth and expanded to South Bantaskine in 1828 where there were rich coal seams. His family had links to the area as they had taken part on the Jacobite side of the 1746 battle fought over the same land. John married Mary Russell in 1848 daughter of James Russell of Arnotdale the leading lawyer in Falkirk. As a mark of his successful business and career South Bantaskine House was built around 1860. The Ballatines of Edinburgh were commissioned to produce stained glass windows which can now be seen in the Howgate Centre. Unfortunately John and Mary’s only son died from tuberculosis at the young age of 22. However his ’forty foot of daughters’ carried on the family business when John died in 1881. Never married Bessie Nell and Georgina lived in the house and continued to help Falkirk until their deaths. The house was used by Polish officers during the war but unfortunately after the nationalisation of the coal mines the house stayed empty until it was finally demolished. The walled garden still remains and there are many pleasant walks around the estate woodlands and along the Union Canal. The John Muir Way the coast to coast route passes right next to the cottage.\n\nThere are wonderful attractions to visit including the incredible Kelpies and the Falkirk Wheel and a little further afield are Linlithgow Stirling and The Trossachs and Loch Lomond National Park. There are numerous golf courses locally and even the Gleneagles course is only 45 minutes away. You do not have to venture far as from your front door there are cycle and footpaths through the countryside and you can join the pathways along the Forth and Clyde Canal or just relax in the enclosed garden a great place where children can play. The railway station has regular trains to Glasgow Edinburgh and Stirling. Linlithgow is 10 miles away Stirling 12 miles Glasgow 24 miles and Edinburgh 27 miles. Shop and restaurant ½ mile pub ¾ mile. A great cottage down a quiet lane. Well equipped for four adults. Owners were in touch during the week re a heating problem requiring a call out from engineer, but they provided more than adequate secondary heating for us. They provided a welcome pack which was a lovely surprise which included several Scottish items. Comfortable sitting room plus additional small room with second tv and games, books and settee which could be an extra bed if needed. Weren't able to use the garden as weather not suitable, but saw many species of birds and visits from squirrel was great to watch from dining area.

An amazing house with lovely views. The house is located in a small secluded lane which leads directly onto open countryside where you can walk the dog while learning all about the historic battle of Falkirk Muir. Within walking distance across fabulous countryside is Canada Wood Bar and Kitchen which is great for lunch and is dog friendly. The house is within 10 minutes drive of the Kelpies, the Falkirk wheel and Callander House. This is a truly interesting part of the country to visits. The house is beautifully decorated and fully equipped with everything you could wish for and lovely touches. The owners obviously take pride in their hosting skills and it is impossible to fault them. A really lovely stay and I would thoroughly recommend.

Loved this cottage. Was a bit tricky to find but owners were very helpful. Cottage was clean, decor was lovely. We had a very relaxing break. Would definitely return in future.

Beautiful cottage as long as you like being isolated and that’s doesn’t concern you. But if noise from kids/cars during the night in car park beside cottage which we found a bit unsettling.

Elm cottage is in a great location for exploring central scotland, with the train station 5 mins away and not far to many attractions. It's great for cycling with access to the canals and cycle tracks nearby. The cottage is well equipped and spotlessly clean. This was our second stay and would definitely recommend it and hope to return again.

An amazing house in an amazing location with all amenities you could wish for close at hand. Excellent service from the managers, would highly recommend this property and hope to visit again in the very near future.

Excellent, well appointed dog friendly cottage. Very clean and well equipped, fantastic welcome pack, best we have ever had. Good location for Kelpies, Falkirk Wheel, Stirling etc. Only draw back is the fencing. We have small dogs and they could escape quite easily in lots of places, especially at the gates. A few of the pavers in the path are raised to and my Mother, her sister and boyfriend all tripped up over them a few times. Also I only noticed it on the last day but the property has CCTV coverage, remotely monitored by the look of it, I presume it's for outside only and that it wasn't on when we were resident but it certainly was on the day we left. Unnerved me a bit and wondered if we had been watch all week?

Very well equipped and comfortable cottage. Only 20 minutes walk to Falkirk High station with excellent service to both Edinburgh & Glasgow. Highlights of our stay were sighting roe deer near cottage and also seals on our 3 bridges cruise from under Forth bridge (bus link from near Waverley station). Happy to recommend Elm Cottage to family & friends
