Failte is a superb conversion of two former fishermen’s cottages, which have been combined to form a beautiful and spacious house situated right on the edge of the sea.  The property enjoys wonderful panoramic views of the sweeping coastline, with a traditional Scottish golf links beyond.  It adjoins the beautiful sandy beach of Brora.  Continually owned by generations of MacRae fishermen since the 1820’s, the current owner (a direct descendent) has carried out a stunning refurbishment whilst integrating the adjoining cottage.  The main living area is on the upper floor, taking full advantage of the magnificent views.  The four large windows overlook the mouth of the River Brora, beach and North Sea with stunning uninterrupted views over 20 miles northwards to Berriedale Head. Exposed beams and a feature fireplace of Caithness flagstone and original decorative local sandstone add to its distinctive charm and ambience.   A generous dining room and attractive sun lounge on the ground floor overlooking the estuary, golf course and beach ensure there is plenty of living space.  Five bedrooms, two bathrooms and a downstairs cloakroom make this spacious property ideal for a two-family or extended family holiday.  There is a fully enclosed private garden to the rear and at the front of the house a parking area, further gardens both grassed and paved (ideal for barbeques) are for visitor’s use.

Failte is a lovely cottage in a great location, the upstairs lounge is a beautiful room and has fabulous views across the estuary to the beach and the golf course. There were four of us and a dog staying and Brora had all the amenities we needed, combined with fantastic walks and lots of wildlife. We enjoyed seeing the grey seal swim into the estuary every day, as well as the heron flying in most evenings. The arctic terns further up the beach were lovely too and we saw butterflies and dragonflies galore. However, there should have been eight of us staying, and although Failte does sleep eight and there is enough space in the lounges and dining room for that number, only seven beds were made up on our arrival and the sheets hadn’t been put ready on the z-bed for us to make it up. I’d have been pretty grumpy about having to make up a bed after driving for 11 hours to get there too, and I’m fairly sure the particulars didn’t specify that the 8th bed wasn’t a proper bed. Also, the kitchen is not adequate for eight people and eating out every day would be very expensive. The cooker is smaller than average at 50cm wide instead of 60 cm, and there was only one small baking tray. It was hard enough cooking for four on it, let alone 8. There were just 8 mugs (some chipped or cracked), and although there were technically 8 cereal bowls, many were chipped or cracked and they ranged in style and size from absolutely huge to comically small. None of the cutlery matched either, hardly a big drama but for the sake of about £50 in Ikea or Tesco, the owners could create a much better impression of the kitchen facilities by buying a set of cutlery and crockery, a decent sized chopping board and a few more baking sheets. It's annoying to have just the bare minimum number of everything and having to continually wash up, especially with a slimline dishwasher. Finally, some guide on how to use the heating and hot water system would have been welcome. It was sweltering in the house when we arrived and there didn’t seem to be a way to turn off the heating without also turning off the hot water. We turned off all the radiators that could be turned off but even so, those in the bathrooms that came on with the hot water got very hot which seemed unnecessary in summer time. Finally finally, some decent black-out blinds would have been welcome in the bedrooms for those of us not used to the almost complete lack of darkness. The upstairs double was as light as daylight from about 3am onwards. It could also have been a little cleaner (e.g. toothpaste spatter from previous guests on the walls behind each sink, which took me about 40 seconds to clean off) but with teenage boys and a dog it did mean I was less worried about ensuring show-home conditions. This all sounds very negative but Failte is a very nice holiday cottage in a good location, with ample parking and a lovely living space. It's just let down by a few minor niggles that could be very easily rectified.

Our third visit to this really quirky cottage since 2017. This should tell you how we feel about this cottage. Feels like home from home as it is a well loved family home. Views to die for. Enjoyed watching the two Herons and Seal that appear at certain times of the day. Always really warm and plenty of hot water. Can’t understand why some people find it cold in the cottage and experience no hot water. Husband is a Chef and finds the kitchen adequate for his cooking needs - especially as we’ve just had a new kitchen fitted in the last few weeks. We have never found any problems with collecting or returning the keys as we pass the Owners Hotel on our way. When ringing the Owner a few days before arriving at cottage this is the usual method of key collection suggested. Look forward to returning again.

Our accommodation needed a good clean, there was dog hair everywhere, there was no one available to give us a key we waited over an hour. No heating or hot water for the first day until we figured out the system even then couldn’t have a hot bath without boiling the kettle. Smoke detectors went off at 6 am in morning and as they weren’t going to come and fix them had to be taken down as none of the 5 would work - this was with their knowledge. Also used an electric heater on our first night and it blew the lights. And we had to take the key back to them in the village as there was no one to give it to. The location was great house was large but not good.

A beautiful cottage which has the wow factor! 197 year old building which has been tastefully modernised and has loads of character. A real gem. The cottage location is probably the best in Brora, amazing views from most rooms. The owner and caretaker were very nice and made us feel very welcome. Thanks you for your hospitality and a great place to stay.
