During World War II it was the headquarters of the Royal Marine Commandos, and used by the team planning P.L.U.T.O the "Pipeline Under The Ocean". This was the brainchild of Lord Mountbatten and Winston Churchill as a huge secret pipeline from Liverpool across England to the Isle of Wight, then under the Channel to Cherbourg built to deliver fuel for allied vehicles during the D-Day landings.Today this charming holiday home makes an ideal base for groups or families. The golden sandy beaches stretch for miles and the Esplanade is packed full of amusements and crazy golf as well as several places to eat. Away from the beach the main town hosts a multitude of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants to enjoy. The Old Village is world famous with it’s pretty thatched cottages, cosy tea rooms, pubs, restaurants and craft shops to discover. There’s also Shanklin Chine to explore, carved by Mother Nature’s own hands over thousands of years. The stunning tree lined gorge cuts its mark from the Old Village down to the sandy beach and esplanade below. In the evening the waterfalls and woodland are illuminated, giving the gardens a totally different aspect and atmosphere.Shanklin is well served by public transport around the island with regular buses and the railway ’Island Line’ to Ryde and Sandown. Outdoor pursuits on the island include horse riding, fishing, cycling, paragliding, golf and water sports. There are numerous attractions across the island to discover for all ages, such as The Needles with its chairlift, amusement park, boat rides, lighthouse and coloured sands of Alum Bay, Blackgang Chine, Dinosaur Isle, the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, Ventnor Botanical Gardens, Tapnell Farm Park and Carisbrooke Castle, or why not pay a visit to Queen Victoria’s favourite holiday residence, Osborne House and its gardens? The sailing towns of Yarmouth and Cowes also make for a great day out. Whatever you decide, one things for sure, the Isle of Wight has plenty to offer. Shop, pub and restaurant ¼ mile.

We had a wonderful stay in Fairfield. The double beds were huge and very comfortable. The apartment was equipped with all you could wish for. The location was perfect for a little browsing round Old Shanklin or a walk down to the beach. Just a word of warning - a large percentage of attractions and tea rooms are only open from March to October. Not that this bothered us, as we were very fortunate with the weather and were able to enjoy the sea views.

Fairfield Old School House was a great place to stay and ticked all our boxes - very, very comfortable and had everything we needed. High quality - huge and comfortable beds - real wooden floors - new equipment - very clean and all in working order - nothing to complain about at all - all in all, a great place to stay! The wooden chess set was used every day...also played IOW Monopoly, but Dad won :-(! Thanks Neil and Jane x

Fairfield has a wonderful location within walking distance of Old Shanklin and the beach. The dog friendly part of the beach has plenty of space for dogs to run around but check the tides before you venture out. The apartment is fully equipped to meet every need. There is a wealth of information left by the owners about local attractions, restaurants and general information. The apartment is beautifully presented with large bedrooms and a lovely lounge to relax in.

We had a wonderful break based at Fairfield Old School House. The location is fabulous being within a short walk to the older part of shanklin with its pictoresque gift shops and tea rooms and opposite to a nice park which our dog enjoyed exploring. The flat is roomy and comfortable with nice quality furniture giving it a home from home feel, and the accommodation is very well equipped indeed from rainy day games, Wii, sky/Netflix and lots of useful additions in the kitchen like cafetiere and thermos flask as well as all the normal things you would expect. We would recommend both Shanklin with its nice beach and seafront - including the interesting 'chine' and Fairfield house which we found to be excellent and a very relaxing place to stay.
