This detached former fisherman’s bothy is one of a small group of houses in a wonderful seaside location, accessed by a farm road with a section of track, and with the stunning beach just yards away. The cottage is quaint and quirky. It is a genuine converted working bothy, with the comfortable living room and kitchen open plan to each other, and a separate bedroom and bathroom. The wood burner adds further to the cosy atmosphere, where you can relax in comfort after a day out walking or taking in the sea air. The house is sheltered by the sand dunes, and just beyond is the magnificent 3-mile crescent of sand which makes up Lunan Bay, one of the finest beaches in Scotland.
The beach is popular with surfers, horse riders and bird watchers. Traditional salmon fishing still takes place here in summertime, with nets strung from poles on the beach to trap fish in the falling tide. The Lunan Water meanders onto the beach in a beautiful estuary. High on a grassy bluff overlooking the river and bay are the ruins of Red Castle, built in the 1200s for King William of Scotland. There is a café 220 yards away offering locally produced food, which is great for breakfast or snacks after a spell on the beach. Further afield, but still within easy reach, the towns of Montrose and Arbroath are well worth a visit, while the Angus Glens offer miles of walking in peace and quiet in total contrast to the beach scenery. In the wider area are many notable places for visits such as Glamis Castle. Shop and pub 4 miles, restaurants 3 miles.
Fishermans Bothy (UK5065) can be booked together with Beachside (UK5197) and Riverside (UK5325) to accommodate up to 14 guests.

Spent a few days at this beautiful cottage owner very friendly nothing to much trouble. On arrival log burning fire all set to light with logs in basket kindling to relight for another day. Very peaceful and quiet stay just the break you need for a relaxing few days. Great walks with dog on the very nearby beach surrounding areas very easy to get to will be returning.

Location Location Location This is the place to come if you want peace & quiet & fab walks along a huge stretch of sand .The Bothy is a stones throw from the beach but in sheltered sunny position, we made use of a bench & a pic nic bench outside to sit on . The Bothy has everything you need, washing machine , fridge ,microwave , cooker , kettle & the usual utensils & crockery . It was certainly enough for 2 & more. There's an immersion system to switch on which is super easy to use , you just need to remember to switch it on after you've finished cooking & by the time you've eaten there's plenty of hot water to do the pots. We found the beds comfy with good quality linen & warm duvets. We didn't use pillows as always take my own on holidays . The Bothy was surprisingly much bigger than I'd expected. I personally loved the twin bedroom set up . It was nice & cosy sitting in bed reading with the log burner on . Having the log burner made the stay for me . I knew I would buy extra logs for the week so factored that into my budget. I like to be toasty. Also I think because the Bothy is old & not lived in all year round it needs the log burner on to warm it up . The Bothy is not damp , but there is a slight smell of damp. Theres a great big bath in the bathroom but we only used the shower which was lovely & hot. I also found the fireside chairs to be comfortable , my daughter hogged the sofa . We did not miss having a TV . My daughter brought 9 books to read . We found that our mobile signal was terrible inside the Bothy (the Bothy walls are over a foot thick) but ok when you were outside & once we were connected to the wifi we had no issues. I took my own blankets & hot water bottles , pic nic chairs & torches with me as I wouldn't expect to find those in a 3 star rating. Andrew , the owner was very accommodating. lunan bay is a beautiful, wild & peaceful place to step off the Hampster wheel for a few days . I grew up in the area so I remember seeing fisherman around with big nets hanging up drying & the nets on the beach .I'd recommend staying at the Bothy as it is what I'd expected , a rustic experience in an excellent location . .

Dog friendly. Equipment was poor quality, thin pans and poor kitchen utensils. Fridge/freezer practically unusable. Would benefit from a tv especially in bad weather.

We are familiar with this area and the bothy was just as we expected. A stones throw from the lovely Lunan beach.Owner very accommodating. Bothy comfortable for two. With just a little bit of tlc in parts it would exceed expectations!

We have just got back from an amazing stay at the fisherman's bothy ,it was so lovely and relaxing and the owners could not do enough to make sure we had a truly wonderful stay. The place is so magical it made both myself and my husband shed a few tears when we had to leave and we are already sorting our next holiday so we can go back . I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you again to Andrew and Edi for letting us stay in your wonderful bothy and look forward to seeing you again soon.

Cottage location is stunning, however, the cottage requires some attention and investment. It was originally a fisherman's bothy, therefore, is small, however, it is now a holiday let and the price charged for staying reflects this, not a stay in a bothy! I believe a stay at the cottage during milder and Warner months would be much better, as relying on the current heating arrangements for comfort is not great. There are two wall heaters, one doesn't work, the other takes ages to heat up and gives out minimal heat for maximum electricity. There is another heater but again uses electricity greedily. The log burner is great but requires enough logs, which for four days we used 2 wheelbarrow fulls and another large bag. Only one barrow load is provided free. The electricity also has to be purchased, after the free £10 or £20 allocation, dependent on length of stay, at a shop in Montrose. Given we stayed over Xmas and the cottage devoured electricity and logs, we spent most of our time anxious, that we would be left cold and in the dark. Given there is an increase in cost over this period, logs and electricity should be free. There were other drawbacks in that the hot water takes at least an hour to heat up, which meant we mostly boiled kettles. Shower keeps alternating temp and gets scaldingly hot, so you need to dip in and out of it. The sofa has seen its day and this and the fireside chairs require replacing. The bedroom window leaked, resulting in my daughter sleeping at bottom of bed. WiFi is poor and no TV, which is great for a "getting away from it all" break, but the customers should be informed of the poor cover and surely as adults we can make a choice not to turn on TV!! The setting of the cottage is beautiful, literally yards from the loveliest beach. The cottage has a lovely enclosed garden. As I said earlier in warmer months the cottage would be great, and with some refurb and investment could be superb!

Had a very relaxing few days which is exactly why we booked . Cottage is ideal for the beautiful beach only steps away & a great base to explode the stunning Angus coast . The owner is very friendly & helpful , he meets you personally . The Electic & logs provided lasted our entire stay . If your looking for a quiet, rural break I would highly recommend this cottage .

My mum and I enjoyed a short stay at the bothy. It should have been a full week but unfortunately was cut short due to illness. Andrew the owner was very welcoming, he met us at the property and showed us around. I had spoken to Andrew previously regarding taking my cat and he had been very nice and assured me that it was fine. A lovely cake and fresh flowers were in the cottage on our arrival. I was slightly disappointed with the accomodation initially as I had thought there was a separate bedroom and in fact it is all one room which is divided by chipboard partitions, the bedroom partition did not reach the ceiling. This didn't cause a problem really but I think needs to be clearer on the pics or description. The two single beds are built in and unfortunately the mattresses are well past their best, the duvets (for us) were not sufficiently warm for a Scottish winter. We added the extra blanket and the hot water bottles which made it warm enough. There are screw ends poking through in the bedroom cupboard which are very sharp. The large storage radiator didn't work. The sofa in the living room was very uncomfortable unfortunately, again I think it has seen better days and needs replacing. We loved the woodburner, but would have liked instruction on the various knobs and their usage. There were a large number of safety hazards which we feel need addressed immediately. The appliance plugs are all plugged into adapters. The kettle, toaster and microwave were all plugged in to an adapter beside the kettle which leaked. Water and electricity do not mix. The kitchen was very basic, some of the doors not opening. We had been cooking for 4 (table has 4 chairs) family stay close in Montrose and had given us some fresh crab to have for dinner. Unfortunately no pots big enough to cook more than one crab at a time. Other kitchen items missing (measuring jug, scales, bowls etc) so no family dinner for 4. I knew when booking that it was a bothy and as such is a no frills accommodation but this was expensive for what we got. I was also really surprised after having read the reviews and the high ratings, that what we got was just not what we had expected. I am sad to have had to write what seems to be such a negative review but it is an honest one. The positioning of the bothy is fantastic for access to the beach, which is a gem. There is easy access to the beach if you are able bodied but not otherwise. You do need a car to get to the property and access to shops in Montrose. We did enjoy the time spent at the bothy and it was very clean and tidy. I am sure Andrew would have provided the items we needed had we asked but we felt that they should have been provided. Unfortunately we will not be returning to the Bothy. No malice is intended with this review and comments and I hope Andrew will take on board the safety issues. Best wishes.
